Uh oh! I can't help you here! When I make something with that many points
in the center, my best friend is a large button or yoyo to make it all better! I'm sure you'll get much more expert advice from someone soon! |
I trim the corners before sewing, less bulk.
|
Are you measuring exactly??? Now....after checking that -- start a new one...(smaller will help you learn).
first -- where did you get the pattern? Not to put any site down, but I've found problems with some on the websites for patterns. When you sew -- do NOT stretch your fabric. If you remove stitches, do NOT stretch your fabric. Sew two "blades" of the star together, then two, then two, etc. Now sew 2 of the doubles together. Then sew 2 more of the doubles together. You should have 2 pieces...4 blades each. Iron the seams in one direction. It helps me to lay the pieces on the ironing board as if they're a whole star, right side down. Iron CAREFULLY - do NOT stretch! Now sew the two pieces together. I cannot stress enough to NOT stretch! Good luck! |
thnk you so much i think i did strech when i had to take out seams. other wise i did do it as you suggested. i guess i will try, try, try till i get "it"...
|
thnx to all. i did not get this pattern from any where... just came to me.

Press each stage carefully. One tutorial I watched showed stitching just outside of the point - it allows for the turning of the fabric and makes the points just that much sharper.
|
I do mine in stages and I just finished 12 blocks. I sew two of the diamonds together with the square for the corner, set them aside and do the next set. I do this until I have them all done, then I press and add the triangle then put two of the sections together and add the second triangle. Then I lay that half block aside and make the rest of the sections into half blocks. Finally I sew all the half blocks together and I'm done. They don't always turn out perfectly but close.
|
I can't help either as I am fairly new at this and have not attempted anything that has a star. Would be interested in how they do it though.
|
It might help some if you spray starch/sizing each piece before you sew the pieces together. Then make sure each piece is cut accurately before sewing again.
Another hint is to pin the center point of the star when you put the 2 halves together, start in the center and pin to the outside edge, then sew from the center to one outside and then from center to the other outside edge. Do not overlap stitching at the center point, adds too much bulk. Some times it helps to open the last seam and press it flat. Remember to show us your block when you are satisfied with it. |
I didn't see that any one mentioned this, but many folks will press seams open when you have several seams meeting at the same point as in your star...that spreads out the bulk. otherwise, the more you practice the easier it will be to make the points correctly.

I haven't made a star yet, but have chronic problems with "straightness". There was a tutorial on here that suggested using washable glue sticks to match and hold the edges of the two fabrics being pieced. So far, it works for me. But "so far" is only 2 blocks!
Others with more experience can weigh in on the glue stick method for stars. |
I don't know if you were foundation piecing. I found that not pressing the points with 100 accuracy will cause them to be larger than they should be and they don't fit together right. I had to scrap a whole 12" star before I learned that lesson. Also, Carol Doak teaches to machine baste over the match points until they are right.
