I was reading my Fons & Porter quilt mag today and saw an ad for a Dear Jane BOM. It cost $25 to join and $24.95 per month for 23 months. If you add that up, it comes to $600! I understand that there are LOTS of blocks, but still! Unbelievable. I could/would never spend that much. But, that's just me...

The cost is the main reason I don't do BOMs. My LQS has been doing a BOM of Sylvia's Bridal Quilt. I think it was about $25 to sign up plus the book and then $6/month for 4 blocks. We'll be doing 80 of the 134 blocks in the original quilt. Because of the differing skill levels of the quilters signed up, the owner decided to end it early. She felt some of us would be in waaayy over our heads. She must have been thinking of me

This has been a great way for me to do the quilt. The blocks started with easy ones & progressed to the more difficult. I've learned so much & improved my quilting a lot. :D

For that price, you could buy EQ's Dear Jane software and do your own BOM. But only one block a month would take an eternity!

I've been thinking about making a DJ quilt and I saw the ad you mentioned. I was shocked! I'm checking out other ways of making one that won't be quite as expensive.

Yes the blocks are only 4 inches. If you buy the book or software you can make it for much less then that. There are plenty of helpfull people if you run into trouble. The skills required vary. Some of the blocks are very simple where others will likely stretch your skills which isn't a bad thing.

There was a DJ group on this site a couple of years ago. They worked together and posted pics as they went. If you do a search above, you'll be amazed at the beautiful blocks.

I saw a kit for a Dear Jane. They said it would use leftover fabrics so not all would be the same. The cost was $480.00. Still expensive I think. Once you get the backing, you can be a scrappy as you want. Each block doesn't need very much fabric.
