Do we have any ladies here in the process of making a Dear Jane? I'm not.... but I've been thinking on it for a couple of years, on and off. hehe I do have an Underground Railroad started for myself, so I would definitely finish that before beginning something like Jane.

I did, just now, sign up on the Dear Jane mailserv email list! I hope that proves to be inspirational for me. :D

Anyone else?

Check out the link, the cyber sew starts in January, it's gonna be a blast! There was also a DJ Christmas block swap, you should check that out. The blocks are great!

Brazen 11-25-2009 05:47 PM

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! That is some thread that I missed... I never leave the Pictures section!! LOL I should get out more!

Thank for telling me about these, Donna!!

Brazen 11-25-2009 06:47 PM

The whole Jane quilt is so intimidating!! I don't know how to paper piece, OR applique! I'd be learning an awful lot.... LOL

I WANT to have done the quilt, but it's scary to think of getting started.

If I do it, I want those new Moda civil war fabrics!!!!!!!!!!

retrogirl02 11-25-2009 07:49 PM

Brazen,
I am clueless about pp and applique, too so dont' feel bad. I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up with the ambitious schedule but will be glad to challenge myself with some new techniques. I will do my best to keep up and do hope you'll join in. :D

Brazen 11-25-2009 08:37 PM

Retro, I'm thinking about it! I'm REALLY 'famous' for beginning quilting projects and never finishing. It's a real problem. LOL! And this would be the largest undertaking ever for me... which if my personal history continues... I won't finish. LOL

I am slowly reading thru that huge thread about everyone's plans and how-to's... that's goading me on to try it. I guess I would need to order the template triangles or whatever... I want the book and not the software, but it doesn't sound like the book is very helpful. :( Which are you going to use?

kluedesigns 11-25-2009 08:50 PM

i hope you join in. i'm going to try and make some of the more challenging blocks easier to put together.

i'm big on paper piecing since the pieces are so tiny it helps with the precision.

the plus side to the jane quilt is its very hand sewing friendly, since thats how she put it together, so i'm sure as we get going some of the really tough blocks i'll just hand piece.

the software is nice because it can print out all the patterns for the block and it has many variations on the blocks.

you could certainly use the book and trace off the patterns.

i will be putting up the paper piecing order for the blocks for the people who use the book.

Rhonda 11-25-2009 08:54 PM

We have alot of paper piecers on here. Bearisgray has been redrafting some of the Dear Jane blocks using her folding paper. Check out her PDA(personal diary and announcements section).

http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/420/23019.page

I plan to do some redrafting of the blocks using my cut down method of piecing. When I have time over the next few weeks. I will start a thread just for the redrafts as soon as I can. I hope to have a few of them done before the Cyber Sew in Jan.

Klue on the Dear Jane threads also is going to redraft to give those who want to learn to do the DJs by paper piecing a chance to try it. You can pm her or let her know on one of the DJ threads and I am sure she would be happy to help.

Hope this gives you some ideas!

edit: I see you posted the same time I did Klue! LOL

Brazen 11-25-2009 08:59 PM

thank yoU!!

Klue, would these two rulers be what I'd want to get?

http://ihavea-notion.com/store/item_...ane-Rulers.htm

sharon b 11-25-2009 09:02 PM

Those are the ones.. but I know Klue found some on Ebay for a little bit less than that (cost wise). I will be watching and doing some but I am afraid there is no way for me to keep up :? LOL

kluedesigns 11-25-2009 09:08 PM

those are the rulers. most of us have purchased them thru this ebay seller. the price is great, shipping is reasonable, and she ships super fast.

at least 10 of us have used her so you can totally trust her.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dear-Jane-Tools-...item4148dd940c

some one just put up an ad trying to sell the software but i don't know this person and she hasn't been here long or posted much so i know nothing about that person.

Brazen 11-25-2009 09:16 PM

Ok, I did it! hehe Klue, I bought the rulers from the ebay seller you recommended. I didn't stop to think... just clicked and paid. So that was step 1 in the wholllle process. :)

Someone here posted this link to Moda civil war repros... http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Item--i-M-8150-AB Do you think 35 FQ's is enough for this project? I think I would use muslin for the background/sashing/etc.

kluedesigns 11-25-2009 09:32 PM

i love that fabric and i'm not a repro kind of person.

that set should suit you very well.

1/4 of a focal FQ will make 2 blocks or 1 block & a triangle. so if you need just a little extra you could pick up a half yard of your favorite print from that collection.

that line just came out so you can certainly buy the bundle and then 12 months from now if you need a little bit more it will still be very easy to find at the shops.

retrogirl02 11-25-2009 10:51 PM

Brazen,
Klue has done an amazing job with her helpful hints in getting set up. I was going to get the book but heard from several people who had completed at least one that the book was nice to have but didn't help much with the actual process. I went ahead and purchased the software but I'm not that familiar with EQ and it is taking me a while to get the hang of it. I have not yet purchased the rulers but may add those soon. I'm VERY grateful that we'll have the suggestions of the board members to help along the way...and encourage us when we are having a tough time.

cabbagepatchkid 11-26-2009 08:03 AM

How about this packet of 200 fat sixteenths:
http://cgi.ebay.com/200-fat-16ths-9-...#ht_500wt_1162
It seems like a good assortment.

Brazen 11-26-2009 08:57 PM

Wow, nice find there cabbagepatch!! Thank you for sharing. I notice, in comparing your link to mine from above, the 200 fat 16'ths have greens in there, whereas the Moda line doesn't seem to have green! Strange.

On that ebay auction they don't mention what brand the fabric is. I wonder if I should get the Moda just to get that good name.... What would you all choose to do? I'm definitely going to have to buy whatever I use for the project, so using my own stash isn't an option because I don't have any civil war repros. :)

sharon b 11-26-2009 09:10 PM

Can't you send the ebay seller a question and ask what line the fabric is from ? I would aslo be interested in knowing

I'll be back when they reply!

If you want to follow Janes original, she used a different fabric for every block, and I found that a 16th is plenty for a block. I have the top of mine completed, and am doing the borders. Using the Civil War fabs would be stunning! Muslin works great. I would suggest you buy 14-15 yards off rthe same bolt so it will all be the sane dye lot.
But one thing you all could do is guy fat quarters and cut them into 16ths and swap. It's a lot of fun that way, so long as everyone is on the same page about the era of the fabric.

My local quilt shop is having a class for DJ but it is for hand sewing.
I have never done hand sewing so am leary of signing up. It is cheap at 40 dollars for the whole series of classes.

yes, you wouldn't use the quilt. i don't know anyone who has made a jane and actually uses it to sleep with - its too much work to make.

Hey Sharon, here is the reply from the ebay seller. I think I'm going to get her bundle!

HI:
The fabrics in the 200 fat 16th packets are by
Marcus (Rothermel), Peter Pan, Moda, FabriQuilt, SSI, Kona Bay etc.
All are from quality Companies,
I had a fabric shop for many years, these are from the late 1990s-early 2000s, When ?Poison Greens? and ? Double Pinks? were popular
This fabric has not been available for several years and my supply is limited
Thank you for your interest.

Hey, everyone, I know where you can get poison green, cheddar, and dbl pink. The shop is called Grandma;s Attic; put a dot com and you have her website. She specializes in repros from 19th century. Also, www.reproductionfacrics.com- will get you even more. Lotsa luck!! YTQ

It's kind of fun to have a little "take-along" project for those hurry up and wait situations.

I think it would be worth taking the class. Jinny Beyer said she hand pieces almost all of her quilts while traveling (before 9/11 anyway)

yourstrulyquilts 11-28-2009 09:48 AM

Hand sewing is SEWWWWW fun! and it's addicting, too. I love doing my Jane that way. go for it; you can always change to machine if you don't like it.

bearisgray 11-28-2009 10:01 AM

for some of the blocks, I think it's easier to hand sew them

kosmos 11-28-2009 12:03 PM

My first Dear Jane was hand pieces. Now I'm looking forward to machine pieceing after the first.

sharon b 11-28-2009 03:04 PM

Thanks for the answer I haven't received an answer yet, but I will go check on ebay and see if it just didn't make it to my email :?

There is a story Jinny Beyer tells of sitting in a guild meeting one time. She was busy hand piecing away and did not realize until the room got quiet & she looked up that anyone was paying attention to what she was doing. Well, they were. Seems the rest of the group was shocked and one gal told Jinny that she hand pieced faster then most women can machine piece. I've never forgotten that. It's like a fun fact. It's because of her that I began to hand piece, though I admit I've never finished a quilt that way. I wonder if I can challenge myself to do one quilt using any techniques necessary to get the block done (applique, paper piece...) and one block done entirely by hand. It would be fun to compare the two finished quilts and see just how different they come out.

Janstar 11-28-2009 06:55 PM

YTQ and Kosmos, would you happen to have pictures of your DJs? We would love to see them!

yourstrulyquilts 11-28-2009 07:00 PM

No, I don't. I'll have my daughter come over and take one with her camera, and put it on for me. I'm computer challenged, but she's a whiz! Try to get it done this week. Thanks for being interested.

That would be great YTQ! Iv'e been reading everything I can about DJ and her fabulous quilt. I've also been experimenting on a few blocks and triangles and have become quite addicted to them. Can't wait to do the blocks in January. Are you going to join us? Klue has really been putting together some great helpful info for all of us. Looking foreward to your pics!

I may be joining you.......I have a second idea in mind and have all the fabric......thought I'd paper piece it, but some blocks won't pp that easy, so would just sew them on the machine. If y'all go to DearJane.com, you will find tips and hints, and somewhere on that site is a score sheet to keep track of how many pieces you put into it. I looked for it the other day, but it eluded me. As I said, I'm computer challenged. I'll try to find it again and if that doesn't work, I'll get my dau to put it on for me by scanning it. It sounds like fun, and I do need one more project!! :-D

I love her idea of promising a quilt when a child is older so that she can enjoy it for awhile!
