Decisions, decisions?
 

I found this Daisy Kingdom "Cherries " fabric in my stash that I want to use for backing. Problem, it has a border on both sides but is wide enough for my top. Decision, should I position it on the one side to have the cherry border and trim off the other side or center it and cut off some of the border on each side? I really like the cherry border but it will leave only about 3/4 inch extra on one side of the quilt. Will I be able to keep the top on track while quilting so I don't run out of backing on that side? I need help deciding![ATTACH=CONFIG]561995[/ATTACH]

Cute top....I personally would hit the stash and find something else...or if that is the "one" I would put cut, resew so that border down the middle.....jmho

Let me see if I understand what you're asking. You want to use the cherry fabric for a backing, and you want both borders to show? Why not cut the border off, trim off just enough of the center part of the fabric, then reattach the border? Make sure you allow enough fabric for the seam allowances.

Since you want it for the backing and you want the borders to show, I would cut the material in half and seam it so that you take the extra from the middle of the fabric.

I would cut it twice, about 10" in from each selvage. Rotate the edge strips so that the borders are now on the inside instead of the outside. Then you can centre the quilt on the backing, and not have either border cut off.

I like the idea of using both borders for your backing. It could be a little bit tricky with only 3/4 inch extra width on either side. I think I would find a fabric that matched the outer edge of the border fabric and sew it on just for 'comfort'. If you do not really need it except for stability on the outer edge, it will be cut away in the squaring up process. If you need it, that small amount will probably go into the area under the binding. You could also do this process with the fabric you use for the binding. It would be unobtrusive.

I agree with Geri B. It's going to look off balance with the different borders.
