I just read the letter in Quilter's Cache about a custom person who defaced all a quilter's quilts by marking each with "Sample" with a Magic Marker. She was on the way to a Quilt Show! Sorry I don't know how to send the link.

redkimba 08-02-2010 10:33 AM

Oh, I would have used all sorts of foul language on that person...

Candace 08-02-2010 10:36 AM

Yes, this has been posted on another thread.

wvdek 08-02-2010 10:38 AM

Oh my gosh!

Hope someone finds the link so we know for sure before running off in the wrong direction.

Found the link.

A custom's agent at the border insisted that a Canadian's quilts be labeled as "Sample" before letting her go to a quilt show in the USA. He had her use his felt tip pen!! Just awful.

nativetexan 08-02-2010 10:49 AM

boy i'd make the Canadian government pay for those quilts!!

sharon b 08-02-2010 10:56 AM

If I remember correctly it was an American Agent that made her do it

JJs 08-02-2010 11:03 AM

ignorance knows no bounds

UglyCook 08-02-2010 11:48 AM

I guess the one tiny spark of light is that her quilts must have been incredibly awesome for the agent to be so convinced she would sell them.

lab fairy 08-02-2010 11:50 AM

I hope she sends him a bill for his purchase of "sample" goods.

buslady 08-02-2010 12:07 PM

As a waitress we used to get ink on our uniforms and hairspray took it out very well. It's worth a try.

Lori L 08-02-2010 12:29 PM

By reading the blog, it sounds like one of the posters has a brother in a position with customs to assist with this stupidity. I hope someone (the stupid custom agent) has to sit down and write an apology (just to start with) and secondly, someone realizes that works of art were defaced!

raptureready 08-02-2010 01:25 PM

Personally instead of ranting on this board I think we should all contact the border patrol and demand restitution for her. Bombard them with so many complaints that something has to be done. Copy her blog to Larry King, or Bill O'Reilly or some of the large news shows that have some clout. The border patrol agency should be made to pay for the quilts.

CoyoteQuilts 08-02-2010 07:50 PM

I think I might cry over this one.....

debbieumphress 08-02-2010 08:03 PM

Oooooooooooooh the wrath of a quilter. Go get 'em .....I would have had to 'Jap-slap" him myself. LOL

tolepainter54 08-02-2010 08:09 PM

Where's the quilt police when you need them? Remember the one that was upset because the quilt was being used as a blanket on the ground! This would have really pushed her over the edge. I am so sorry you had to do this to your quilts.

CarrieAnne 08-02-2010 08:22 PM

Good idea Rapturerady!

OmaForFour 08-03-2010 05:57 AM

I would document this whole thing and how your friend was treated exactly the opposite. I would get a lawyer and make the Canadian government pay for the damage you were forced to do to them. THEN i would never go back to Canada again! Why spend time and money in a country that is so hostile to quilters!
I live near Canada (in Maine). I am glad to know about this. I am DONE with Canada!

It was a US customs agent that forced a Canadian citizen to deface her quilts before entering the United States for Quilt Market. Get your facts straight before attacking good neighbors.

marthe brault-hunt 08-03-2010 08:27 AM

A big show Like Houston should organize a special display for that artist quilter with the defaced quilts and make a lot of publicity around it. Tv and newspapers should be alerted. In Quebec we have a small town sitting on the border, called Derby LIne.The border pass in the public library. The U.S. Customs moved their garrets a few miles further and the people have to present their passports after a detour to go to church, do their shopping or visit friends, They create terror instead of fighting it.

catrancher 08-03-2010 09:24 AM

What a tragedy!

Annz 08-03-2010 04:50 PM

Oh my gosh that is terrible. One should carry a disappearing ink pen with them just in case this happens. That is unbelievable.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT IDEA. I will do that right now. Bill O is my preference, but both will do a good job with this one!

quilter1 08-03-2010 05:19 PM

It was the American border guard who was at fault, not the Canadian. The quilter should report this to US Customs. The whole matter is unacceptable, and the original art is ruined.

Gerbie 08-03-2010 05:34 PM

Yes, yes Yes, I think I would have had to choke a custom agent or two for that incident. Might send it to Greta or Hanity as well any of them would do a great job, perhaps even Geraldo, he definitely would get in the act.

Dee 08-03-2010 06:33 PM

Dh said he should be put in a room and told to resew every one of them. I would go after that ----- and make them pay for the damage and stress it caused you. This one is very hard to believe anyone could be such a ???????

This is so heartbreaking. That guy was just flexing his muscles & showing you who's boss. I hope he slept poorly that night.

sewnsewer2 08-03-2010 07:08 PM

I would have refused to do it! And gone home.

annette1952 08-03-2010 07:23 PM

Oh that is terrible! I would of refused & went back home also. Then I would have complained. Probably wouldn't of done any good but I would of done it anyways.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 08-03-2010 09:03 PM

Thats a shame... one quilter didn't need to one did ???
Maybe just label w/sample in the future, someting that can be hem stitched on, never know all the rules regs and crud they go thru daily.
Would ask customs whats up??

zz-pd 08-04-2010 06:58 AM

That is really sad, I hope she is able to fix all of them. God bless. Penny

PuffinGin 08-04-2010 07:05 AM

I'm sorry about this too. Very much over the top even within the guidelines for the custom's man's job description and personal judgment I'm sure. He sounds similar to one we deal with in Minnesota when returning from a wilderness canoe trip in Canada. Started calling him (among our canoe partners) Barney Fife. Remember him, the deputy on the Andy Griffith TV show. Luckily for us, he moved on (likely was moved) because of multiple complaints.

Marye 08-04-2010 08:36 AM

This needs to be sent to NBC new with Brian Williams he would follow up on this matter.

nwm50 08-04-2010 09:07 AM

BUT....BUT....BUT....still using an magic marker is awful! Can understand custom's reason but why not on the back side????

I hope the agent gets fired and sued.

When you're "done with Canada" I suppose you're also referring to the thousands of Canadians who, on 9/11, drove to airports all across Canada to pick up passengers stranded when the border was closed. They took them into their homes, fed them, clothed them, and never asked for money. Or maybe you're referring to the thousands of Canadian troops who have fought beside the US in Afghanistan for more than 9 years. Or possibly the Canadian embassy personnel who, at risk of their lives, sheltered US embassy personnel during the embassy takeover in Iran in the 70s. You should get your facts straight before you rant and probably shouldn't cross the border anyway. I doubt you'd be welcomed.

gale 08-07-2010 09:21 AM

I don't understand why some people are automatically thinking it was Canadian customs. It doesn't say anywhere in the title or the OP that it was. I've been to Canada and while they aren't exactly jovial at the border (who would be with so many who try to 'sneak' over) they weren't mean or anything. The US customs was slighly less friendly, btw. And I don't understand how even if it WAS Canadian customs (which it was NOT) why that would make someone feel poorly about the entire country and its occupants.
