I am in the process of cutting up a bunch of jeans (my neighbor brought me tons of jeans from the thrift shop she volunteers at) and I am cutting my squares at 6 1/2" but I think they are going to be a little small after sewing 1/2" around the sides. Maybe the blocks need to be bigger because if the cut size is 5" then you sew around the squares you may have a very small square. I like Quiltedsunshines idea of adding small borders around.

Or, you can cut bigger denim squares and put your cotton squares inside them, for a Windows Denim Quilt. The denim squares are sewn into rows, then the seam allowance becomes the front of the quilt. Place a square of batting and a square of cotton inside the seams. Fold the seams down, then zig-zag them in place.

I do like this idea, a lot!

I still have a bunch of denim squares and denim jeans to cut. I think I will do like Quiltedsunshine's quilt. I do like that design. Hopefully won't make it as big as the last denim quilt. Way too heavy.
