I put my sewing machine to the test this past christmas,I made 3. I have to say I didn't use any batting, but did put a light weight backing on. It was a first for making denim quilts and it was very warm without the batting.

Where I live, if I added batting no one would be able to use it, it would be too warm LOL
It is definitely a preference :D:D:D

No, you don't need batting. I made 1 & it weights a ton without the batting. Maybe in Iowa with your winters you might want a batting but not here in CA.

I put at least a layer of flannel in the middle, but it is really a matter of preference.

denim in two layers can get heavy so you don't really need batting in between. just a personal choice.
