Design board
 

I have a large piece of felt left over from my son's school project. Does anybody know if it would work for a design board? I realised that I may need one for my next project so why not repurpose something I already have, if it will work.

If it's the cotton felt it will probably work well, the new poly felts may not work so well but give it a try. I love my design board and have way less problems with placement when I actually USE it. hahaha

I have a small one that I keep near my sewing machine - about an 18" square
Helps me keep my multi-piece blocks in order.
My design wall is the other side of a vinyl tablecloth.

Give it a try--what have you got to lose?

Absollutely. I bet some of us even remember the old flannel/felt boards used to tell stories at the library and sunday school when we were younge.

I have two 4x8 foam boards covered in felt for my design wall. The felt is better then flannel for cotton fabric to stick to it. I bought a damaged foam board from Lowes's for .98 and got several boards cut from it. The smaller boards are great for holding block pieces in place while chain piecing and for taking to classes/workshops. The foam boards are lightweight and easy to staple to the wall, no nail holes.

I prefer flannel to felt on my foam boards....perhaps a personal preferance....or the flelt I tried first was poly....nothing stuck to it.....soft cotton flannel works well for me....

Absolutely try it......should be a quick trial; just throw some pieces of fabric up on it....If it sticks, it works! If that doesn't work, try a cheap flannel backed tablecloth. I have two hanging on a big blank wall...works great! In fact, I can even put the finished quilt top BACK on the board to admire it and try different borders.

The felt I have must be cotton. It holds fabric blocks without pins. It is superior to the flannel for sticking power. It must be vintage. It's very thick and not like the felt I've seen at stores now. I found two bolts of it at an estate sale for $2 each. One gray and one cream color. Eleanor Burns uses vehicle head liner fabric for her design wall. Fabric sticks to that great. Most car body shops have it on long rolls.

what do you use to put the fabric pieces on the design wall pins or?. while you are trying to piece together a project?
