Design ? for charity placemats :)

Our church group was blessed with a fabric donation and I am in possession of strips mostly cut straight from 1" to 1.75". We will be making Xmas placemats for people in the Meals on Wheels program. These will go to the Indian individuals if they prefer them over something made with Xmas colors. I don't normally quilt with strips and I don't normally do scrappy. My first thought was to do do something similar to a strip tube pattern. I have spent the last 3 days searching Craftsy, Google and Esty sites for inspiration. But not happy with the layout. Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated. Strips are mostly in the shades of brown and gold. This design is made with 6" blocks.

I like them. Maybe subcut them once and then sew together again?

I like your design.

I like what you show but you might consider the jelly roll block from 3 dudes. Obviously you will have more strips than you would with a jelly roll but the itechnique ought to work with your strips.

beautiful fabrics and i like your design, too

Lovely fabrics. I like your design. Wish I had some ideas but I don't work with strips much either. But I am currently working on a triple Irish chain which boils down to 5 strips sewn together then subcut into 2 1/2" strips sewn back together into a simple 25 patch block. I wonder if something like that might work ?

I just borrowed a book from a guild library - Strip-pieced Quilts, Easy Designs from Just Six Fabrics, by Maaike Bakker. Some of her designs could be adapted to different size strips and scrappier colors. You can see some of them here - http://www.ateliermaaikebakker.nl/ma.../strip-pieced/ - and some here - http://softexpressions.com/software/...rpPieceQlt.php

I like your design and it's a wonderful idea for cheering up someone.

This is a quilt I made for my father in law, from batik strips, set in solid black:
Sorry the pictures are crummy - I started with a "racer" style quilt but thought it was too boring so I cut it into squares on a 45* angle and then put them back together into larger squares. The border is just strips of squares cut from the original racer. (Wow, look how ruffly my borders are! This was made before I knew you had to measure the darn things, LOL) |
I like your design but not for placemats. For them I would go with only about 4 or 6 of the pieced blocks and fill in with a solid.
