Design Dilemma

1 Attachment(s)
Most of the time when I start a quilt I have it all planned out completely (I don't always stick to the plan but I have one when I start) This quilt I had a center block and have been designing my way as I go out toward the edges. I have it to this point a 40 inch square. I am aiming for roughly 60 or 70 x 80 ish, so I need to add 10 or 15 inches to each side and 20 to each end. While I'm mulling thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas?????

These seams will all match just some are sewn and others not yet

I particularly like that scalloped edge around the center block and would suggest trying to echo that in some way for the next "go around". nice use of the circles!

Pretty center! I also like the scallop edge and if you have enough of the red fabric of the big half circles repeat the scallop in it?

Beautiful, how about a vine feature at the ends that mimics the center medallion? Or a vine feature as a border all around and the scalloped circles on the ends.

Not sure how many rows you are planning on adding, but I would add one that is 4" on the sides and maybe 5" on top and bottom. Increase a little more on the top and bottom rows to gradually build up to the desired size.

I can't help you on the delima but I can tell you I want your pattern when it is released!

Your quilt is beautiful!

I would repeat a similar look to your center in a border, flowers with scallops as your border. I think this design is best as a square, but if you need the length then I agree with AZ Jane, to sneak in small borders at the top and bottom.

I would probably make some sort of smallish drunkard's path block of color set on point and alternating so you get a scallop/point sort of pattern... hope that makes sense.

So you would have the center and a band of solid, the band of curvy/points, and then another solid band top and bottom. You can double the width on the lengths (or halve them on the sides if you wish to think that way).

Now, I'm not much on planning my quilting and my quilting is more functional than artistic, but I would think having wide solid edges as a place to do something fancy could work well -- it's just that my brain doesn't think that way.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am mulling and will definitely post pics when it is done.

The pattern is not mine for the center Hawaiian block that will be published by Quilt Art Designs, she is the designer I tested the pattern for. The rest of the quilt if from my mind though. She is publishing 12 in total I believe and they are all very pretty. This one is about intermediate in skill, she has some easier and some harder.

What ever you do to it will just add to the beauty of it.

Kassaundra, that is so gorgeous! I can't wait to see it finished. You do amazing work!

It’s beautiful as always Kass. I suggest since you have so many curves in this top already it’s time to add some geometric triangles, square non curved piecing to add some visual interest and contrast. This will cause the beautiful curved piecing to be highlighted even more.
