Design Suggestions Needed
 

I'm making this quilt as part of my guild's show team challenge for next year. We were told to choose a fabric from an array of colors without knowing why. I chose the Nautical Blue one. The rules for the challenge are to use the fabric we chose, make a quilt to be displayed in next's year's show, use only solid-color fabric, and have it photo ready by February. (I may not make the deadline. I'm home recovering from surgery and will have to go back to full-time work in two weeks.)

The first picture is the design that I've come up with. It is made up of mostly three-inch half-square triangles. There will be a six-inch outside border of pale peach around the design. It needs to be about six inches longer. What would you add to the ends to make it longer?

The second picture shows the fabric colors that I am using. I put the unsewn blocks of the center design on my display board to get an idea of how the fabrics would play together. They certainly contrast, don't they?

Second question: How would you quilt this?

I'm tired and am running out of ideas.

I would either make your inner or outer borders wider.

Cannot help you on the quilting question though.

To lengthen ... two thoughts
* what if you made each of the verticals one spiral longer?
or
* have more white space between the outside ring and the centre one, so that you are not equi-distance for both spaces between the 3 rings.


To quilt ... I see basic ... SITD to pop the cables/spirals, with a micro-stipple in the background.
Though I bet some will have some unique and much better ideas!

Should be fun for you to work on ... and I'll look forward to seeing it finished.

You could make the top and bottom borders deep to get it as long as you want it. I would put a border all around to finish it off, then wider borders top and bottom. I have done this many times.

Sometimes it's easier to piece when you aren't trying to sew multitudes of HSTs together. There is an alternative way to sew these......with snowball technique. As below.

How to quilt it really has to depend on your skill level and what you're able to do with your machine.

I think those solid fabrics and your very graphic design call out for some spectacular free motion quilting -- if you're not familiar with Angela Waters' books, blog and beautiful modern quilting work, check them out and see if something like that would inspire you. She tends to match thread to each fabric and let the texture of the quilting be the star. Definitely labor intensive with a design such as yours, but the results are lovely.

That's a really cool design!
