design wall
I'm in the process of making a 84" x 96" design wall for one side of my quilting room. I'm making the board out of 3/4"foam board covered with craft felt. I don't want to make holes in the felt when I screw the board to the wall so I decided that I'd like to attach it to the top of my wall with picture hangers or a close to the wall rod or something. Any suggestions? I'm using the washable felt so that when it gets dusty I can take it off and throw it in the washer/dryer.

I bought two yards of 70" wide felt, stapled, regular staple, not a staple gun, it at the top to the wall, and that's all. It works great. As I progress in putting the quilt together I have to pin it to the felt at yhe top as I add more.

I use a pole suspended by two wreath hangers which are hanging over the double closet doors in my room. I've sewn a pocket in a large piece of flannel to insert the pole through. I can take it down whenever I want or put it up in a matter of seconds.

You are screwing the boards to the wall and then attaching the felt to the board? Would strips of sticky Velcro on the board and sew on Velcro on the felt work? Can you wash felt? You might want to go ahead and attach the felt permanently and vacuum it when it gets dusty.

Have fun with your new wall.
I used batting for mine and then a friend helped me mark it with ribbons in 12" squares crosshatching. that was a big help. I have mine folded using duct tape as a hinge and then fold it out when needed. Am still thinking of how to stabilize it against the wall as I want to be able to move it to open it. The same quilting buddy did screw hers against her wall. She used anchors so the screws didn't grab the batting and twist it out of shape/place. It looks really neat. |
Are you set on using the felt? My wall is cream colored fleece and is very clingy. It will hold almost without pins unless a certain Border Collie passes too close swinging her tail.

I used T-pins to pin my flannel to the foam boards. Just fold over the edge of the board and pin in place. They are easy to remove so the mat. can be washed, and then put back into place. The foam is screwe to the wall first, then the material is pinned on.

I attached the foam board to the wall First, then covered over it all with the felt.

If you really are using craft felt it cannot be washed, you may want to use flannel instead. As for hanging it to the wall try using the Command Strips. It may take 4 or 5 to hold it but your wall won't get messed up. As for the hangers on the foam core you can fashion them from just about anything (example large metal paper clips).

I used Command Strip hooks at 2' intervals high on the wall (I am 6' tall, so high is fine for me) and then used banker clips (those black ones with silver wire handles) on each hook. I can hang a small quilt top or the flannel and it holds plenty of weight, doesn't mar the fabric, portable and can be left up or put away as needed.

Make a pillow case & insert the foam board...attach loops or a rod pocket to the top & hang from a curtain rod.
