What materials are used for a design wall?

Anything flat and add some flannel. I've used 4'x8' styrofoam sheets for mine and covered it with a flat flannel sheet.

I've heard of some people using the fuzzy backside of a vinyl tablecloth.

I used headliner fabric. It holds the blocks for a long time. I'm attaching mine to a large roll up shade so when not in use I can roll it up. You can get it ay Hancocks for about 10.00 a yard and it 54" wide.

That is a great idea - Is yours hanging in your window or on the wall?
If you don't mind, I might borrow your idea.

I have it hanging over the top of a closet I don't get into very often. I'll take a picture of it and post it soon.

My sister and I also made "portable" design walls. We used the display boards sold for science projects. We attached flannel. They are tri-fold corrugated cardboard. You can fold them with your project inside to take to classes, guild meetings or any sewing get-together.
