I would like to know if anyone has the designer boards and if so, how do you like them. I read some negatives
reviews on Nancys Notion so I hesitate to buy one. I made
a small one and covered it with felt but I think i should
have a bigger one but I really don't have a lot of room.
I thought about making one with the white PVC pipe and
I could roll it up when I'm not using it. I would have to set
the pipe into something to make it stand up. Just wondering what you gals are using. The floor just don't
work for me. Too much up and down

I have a whole wall in my sewing room covered with warm and natural batting. My whole wall is only about the size of a king size quilt ;-)

I got one of those old fashioned cardboard, tri-fold cutting boards from Joann's (coupon frenzy, of course) and covered it - stapled it, actually - with flannel. When I don't need it, it folds up and stores behind a cabinet. I used flannel so I could wash it if I needed to

In one bedroom, I have a 6' bifold door. I went to the dollar store and got 4 over the door hooks. Then I just took a flannel backed vinyl table cloth & 4 skirt hangers and hung it. Works great and it's easily removed if needed.

I have a wooden valance that runs along the top ceiling edge of the sewing cupboards in my sewing room. I put up two holders with a 1/2 inch pipe running the length of the wood. I bought those cute little rings with clips at Walmart and put them on the pipe. I then clipped a flannel backed plastic table cloth to the clips. I open it flat when I want to use it and push it like a curtain to the wall when not in use.

Clever ideas!

I covered large cardboard ( was the box from our flat screen TV ) with fabric

I have a queen size warm and natural batting with flannel on top of it on one wall in my sewing area in the living since I live alone. IT is stapled to the wall.

Thank you. Love the window covering idea. I can do this! I have the tablecloth already just didn't know where/how to mount it to use as a design board.
Thank you, again for the link.

I have mine on the closet door.........a dollar flannel back table cloth, held in place with thunb tacks, and on the closet door.........you cant do much else with a closet door, since you cant put anything in front of it, and still open it........

Tryin 06-03-2011 11:58 PM

I use two of the tri-fold boards covered with batting and tacked it to my wall. I love it because i can stick pins in it if i need to and i can easily make it vertical or horizontal or remove it if i choose. It is on the wall behind my quilting room door, easily accessed when the door is closed.

I also just bought the vinyl backed table cloths - $3 each. Plan to sew them together for a large 'design wall'. My problem is no place to hang it! Not sure how I'll address that issue when the time comes other than going to my local firehouse and pinning it up on one of their walls.

Do search on "design board' There are many great ideas!

I just finished making mine, and don't know how I lived without it. I use a medium/small bedroom as my sewing studio, and between the bookcase, cutting table, sewing cabinet and large sewing table not much room left but the closet doors. tryed hanging large piece of felt in front of doors, everything fell off. Did a lot of reading and research, and discovered Insulation Foam at Home Depot. Measured my closet doors, 6' 8"...Picked up, by accident the 1-1/2" thick boards, glad I did. Asked very sweetly if they would cut it for me... said they aren't supposed to but would...had them cut it down from the 8 foot to the 6'8" then had them cut each 4 foot wide piece in half. Packed them all in my car and I was off. When I got home used cheap white flannel, cut to size, used 3M Super 77 spray glue. Folded flannel side to inside, used large pieces of duct tape to make a hindge on the back so it folds in half either when I put away or when I need to move it. can keep current project on the board when I fold it onto it self. Stands in front of closet doors at a slight angle. When I am working on a project the blocks 'stick' nicely to the flannel, when I start sewing strips, use pins instead. Whole thing cost me probably $20.00

Let us know how that one works for you !

ctub0126 06-04-2011 06:52 AM

I don't have the space issue because my sewing room is the top floor of our garage so I have a design wall roughly 4 feet larger (side to side) than a king quilt and taller than me. I have felt that I got in bulk (with coupons of course!) and sewed together. I have a PVC pipe top and bottom (in pieces) rigged on some rope I had lying around. I can take it, fold it into about 1/4 the length and roll it up if I need to, but most the time I just drape the clear plastic cover I have for it (dust and birds stink) over what I'm working on. I can make "erasable" notes on the plastic or use safety pins and pin paper around the edges so I don't forget what I was doing.

nativetexan 06-04-2011 06:56 AM

oh i used to have one of those cordboard folding ones. rats!!

DEJAHG 06-04-2011 07:07 AM

I put up a curtain rod on a bedroom wall...when I need a designer area I hang a queen batting on it with curtain clip rings...easy up...easy down

sylviak 06-04-2011 07:19 AM

A friend on another forum put a rod on the wall to hang one of her quilts on. Then she cut a piece of flannel the size of the quilt and attached it behind the quilt. When she needs the design wall, she flips the flannel to the front. When she isn't using it, there is a beautiful quilt there. I thought that was a neat idea!

ann31039 06-04-2011 09:55 AM

cool, i've got a flannel back tablecloth and some skirt hangers. cuphooks too. lets see what i can do. thanks

Ardell 06-04-2011 02:06 PM

The response to the designer quilt wall has been great. I think if I take bits and pieces from each reply I should
have the most sensational designer wall that was ever made.
I know now from all the replys that I won't order one cause
you just don't know what you are getting. Thank you everyone
and hope you all enjoyed this as much as I did.

caliquocat 06-04-2011 02:15 PM

I stapled a flannel backed table cloth to the wall. It's always there when I need it.

Yes! I covered the box that came with my 4" table from Bi-Mart. I used some unloved flannel and spray adhesive. Since I didn't cut the box apart, it has a fold in the center. When I don't need it, it fold in half and slides under my bed, unless the cat is sleeping. ;)

3incollege 06-04-2011 02:23 PM

I have used the tablecloth idea, it worked fine. But had to use a good coupon from joAnns, so I bought the Fon's and Porter design wall. I do like it, but wall space was not an issue, so i can leave it hang all the time. Quilters do have some great ideas.

susanwilley 06-04-2011 02:27 PM

I bought 2 sheets of large insulation boards from Home Depot. DH had to cut about 6 inches off one end of both. They were two tall for my sewing room. I tapped them together and I use that for my quilting board and I also sandwich my quilt on that board and spray baste it for quilting.

Plumtree 06-04-2011 03:03 PM

I went to Home Depot and got a piece of insulation for about $15 and wrapped it with a queen size batting, I used duct tape to secure it on the back then screwed that bad boy right to my wall with drywall screws. Hubby wasn't jumping up and down that I did that but we aren't moving and neither is my design wall. :D

vegasgal47 06-04-2011 10:41 PM

I have an old flannel sheet on my wall and it works great.
