I am making a crumb quilt and want to set my squares on point. There is a lot of help out there for figuring the corner and side triangles, but I also want to add sashing. One site said to add the width of the sashing into the block... ok I may be pretty dense here.... there is sashing on each side of the block. Do I add each side or only one? Any help any of you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Quilter1234

Add sashing on 2 sides - except on ONE of the outside rows where you'll have to add it on another side. Try drawing it roughly on paper, and you'll understand better.

You can see that the sashing is added to the sides of each block (pink) and then long strips of sashing (green) are then added after the row of blocks are sewn together.

Example .. block is 6 inches finished, sashing is 2 inches finished, therefore I consider by block as an 8 inch block and figure my corner and side triangles accordingly.

No...look again closely at the picture posted...the blocks are still the 6"..the sashing is just what it is..2" sashing. When you figure your corner BLOCKS and side BLOCK triangles...they will correspond to your block measurement. I'll tell you who can tell you exactly what size to do...Patrice...she is the goddess of this one!! Ask her.. :lol:

Exactly! And that's just what the quiltville site says. It's quite simple really, if you don't over think it. The finished width of the block (6") + the finished width of the sashing (2") = the finished width of the sashed block (8"). You figure the setting corners and triangles using the finished width of the SASHED block.

You can also cut out these pieces in paper (tape them together if you need to) and then sew them together to see if you have your calculations correct...saves on fabric this way :wink:

setting triangles for on-point quilts used to irritate, aggravate and scare the stuffin' outta me until i looked closer and figured it out. The top and side triangles are nothing more than half-square triangles. Sooooo ... to get them the right size, just add 7/8" to the finished size of the whole blocks.

1. Finished block is 6". That means they'll be 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" before you sew them together.

2. To make your setting triangles, cut squares that are 6-7/8" x 6-7/8". Cut each of these in half on the diagonal. you'll end up with half-square triangles that fit perfectly.

the width of the sashing doesn't matter one bit. as long as you base the size of your triangles on the size of the whole blocks - and DO NOT include the sashing in your calculations, it'll work out every time. ;-)

Patrice to the rescue! Yeahhhh! :lol:

The math given is incorrect, but you should probably do as amma suggested and try it out with paper before you cut cloth. Whether you use call it a 6" square or an 8" square, 6.875" is not the proper measurement for either setting triangles or corner triangles. It would give you corner triangles for an 8.5" finished square.
Just make sure you are aware that doing it Patrice's way, no matter what the correct measurement is, with HSTs as the setting triangles, you will have bias edges all the way around except for the corner triangles which are supposed to be HSTs. Setting triangles are quarter square triangles.

Here is a template for a 6 inch finished block and 2 inch finished sashing.

If your block is 6 inches across, measuring it horizontally on point this is your template for your triangles

If you cut a 6 inch block and then turned it on point, here is the template for that

If you cut out a 6 inch square like normal, and then turned it on point, the second template is the one you want...the triangles all the way around were the same size when I worked it up in EQ.
EQ is about 1/8 inch too large because you can not put in 1/8 inch measurements...so you may be closer than the template. :wink:
