Diagonal Grid Quilting
 

I've been working on a quilting design for a quilt I am currently making and I think I know what I want to do but I need advice on how to execute it.

For the border (the blue only) I was thinking of doing a diagonal grid pattern, like in the second picture but smaller. How is the easiest way to execute this? I'm worried about it coming out funny and like off center or just not a 'perfect' grid pattern.

Will you be doing this by hand, or on a long arm?

It will be done on my sewing machine

The diagonals in the border are a different angle. Try drawing them the same angle and see if you like that better.
Just a thought, the last quilt I made with diagonals in the center I used 4 or 5 straight lines the length of each side on the border and let them criss-cross in the corners.

i like the polka dot fabric , i wouldn't put any more patch work design on it ,looks very nice already ,beautiful quilt and your center quilt top will pop out more with a solid color fabric

How about straight lines. Lining up with rectangle seams to give some quilting on border. Centre I would keep as is.

I would adjust the grid angles to match the angles in the body of the quilt. Quilt the center first then start on the center most area of the border and quilt out toward the outer edge for the grid lines to keep everything square, straight. If you quilt from the outside in you can create the ( wonky) edges you are concerned about.

I like what you have done. I did that type of quilting of lines in my quilt that I use for my avatar photo. I would not do a cross hatch the border but just do a single line. You could just extend the line into the border. Or have it go in the opposite direction at the same angle. If you cross hatched the border, it would be more heavily quilted then the quilt. I always try to balance out the stitch in both the quilt and the borders.

I agree with ckcowl about matching the angles in the border to the angles in the center. Otherwise it might make the quilt look a little wonky.

But, have you thought about doing something curvy in the border? I was thinking the cable pattern might look really nice with all the straight lines in the center. Just a thought.
