Most quilt as you go make a square design. I want to make a diamond shape. What size would one the 4 blocks to make this design? Or does anyone know of a free pattern for it or a tutorial?

You make the diamonds whatever size you want.

The method is the exact same as if it were squares.
You can do curves or insets or any other shape you want.
The only difference for curved QAYG would the sashing would have to be cut on the bias.


What design do you want on the diamonds?

Are the block tops already made?
Or do you want to use the flip and sew method?

But once the blocks (top/batting/backing) they go together exactly as QAYG square blocks would.

I want to do the flip and sew method. I just wondered about the proportion of the long side to the width. I haven't started yet.

I guess it depends on what shape of a diamond you want! They can be long and skinny or more equalized.
The longer and skinnier ... the sharper the points will be at the top, and more bulking of seams where the eight will meet.

OK. I was thinking of doing 4" X 6" rectangles, but is kind of small and maybe a lot of sewing. Makes a 12" X 8" square. I don't want skinny with sharp points. Or maybe could go 5" X 7". How do you think either of these sizes would work?

Are you making stars or just blocks?

Because with blocks there are only the 4 blocks meeting in each corner, just like with squares. ;-)

The proportions below are height = 2x width.

If you like the shape below, then you can draw any template you'd want.

6"x12" would be a good size to do flip and sew. If your strips are under 2" wide, that would give you a nice selection on each diamond (going width-wise)

The way I would do it would be to cut the backing and batting oversized - like 8"x14" diamond shapes or rectangles.
I'd do the flip and sew, making sure I overlapped all the sides by at least 1/2" inch, if not more.

Depending on your level of confidence with the ruler, trim it .
OR trace the template on the back and trim.

Do not forget to add your seam allowances to the shape.

I'm a huge fan of QAYG, and enjoy all the different methods, although I do have my favorites. I love that you're trying something a outside the norm. thumbup:

I've never done anything but strips for a small quilt or runner with the qayg flip and sew, I can't wait to see what your making.

Those would be rectangles ... or are you talking diamonds within rectangles, as shown by MTS?
