Did Anyone Save This?
I haven't been a member too long and I saw info on a blog about a homemade recipe for Mary Ellen's Best Press that had appeared sometime ago on this board but they did not give the recipe. I could not find it in the Archive. I love it and find it is wonderful for hexagons. I would be glad to make it to save my money for fabric! Thanks for help in advance!

Is it this one???

This is the recipe I use in a spray bottle:
2 cups water 1/4 cup cheap vodka a few drops of 100% lavender essential oil Mix and pour into a fine misting spray bottle. The one thing I do is to shake the misting bottle well before each use to make sure the ingredients are well mixed. I know I originally got this recipe from the QB some time ago. |

The vodka I am using is Smirnoffs. It had been in the upper cabinet for 15+ years. Finally found a good use for it. As you can tell I am not a drinker. If I had to buy some I would certainly make sure it was CHEAP!

Never would have made it to 15 years in the back of the cabinet at my house!

Speaking of old liquor.......would have been married 50 yrs last year.....DH deceased year before....anyway still have a cabinet full of liquor from the big Italian wedding...over 300 people....am sure there is vodka down there....that will make one powerful spray....wonder what else I can do with all that scotch, whiskey, gin.........
|
Geri B., just a suggestion, but, don't put this statement on Facebook, or you might have more offers of help than you could imagine.
|
I use the cheapest vodka I can find the last bottle was $5 lol.. But it works well for this and for mixing essential oil sprays. I add a bit to the spray starch I mix myself it seems to make it last longer without getting that funny smell.

I grow lavender in my garden. I wonder if I could make a scent from that to use. Any ideas?
|
I basically use the same recipe but add liquid starch to mine as I want mine to be very stiff or stiffer than the regular recipe makes it. I make it by the gallon too and it keeps nicely. Wouldn't use the starch if you live in the southern states though as palmetto and coach roach bugs love starch as well as glue for those that use Elmer's Glue in your sewing room.
|
Apparently this is the same formula used on the runways of fashion houses to get rid of body odors on the garments.
|
I have never bought essential oil, where do you find them??
|
I read someplace about using solution of 1 cup water / 1 T white vinegar. I've been using it and seems to work well. I can't do lavender -- has to do with seasick med, long story (LOL).

You could use the bourbon to make lots and lots of bourbon sauce for bread puddings (or figgy puddings). Put it in some pretty little canning jars and give it as presents. The gin you can put on cosmetic pads to use as a toner... works wonders for English women, no reason it wouldn't for us. The Scotch you could add to stews, etc, for extra flavor - or use to preserve fruit (there are recipes online).
|
Brandy, and Scotch also are great addition to roasts or stews, it helps to tenderize meats.

Thanks, Caroline S, for the recipe.
I also read through the link Charming posted (Thanks!) and found a lot of valuable information on the whole process. |
I no longer use 'Best Pressed'. Now I use Niagara Spray Starch in a non-aerosol pump bottle, it costs about $1.85 at Walmart and is every bit as good as the other. My friends bring it to me from the U.S. as I can't find it here. In Canada it is common to pay over $12.00 for Best Pressed and that is just plain too much money IMHO.

so funny, mine has been there 30+ years.
|
I've heard that the vodka that is made from potatoes is good to use, but pricier.
