Just put together 12 placemat tops and bought Pellon firm iron on backing. Now, before I mess up--did I get the right thing or should I use fleece or a light weight batting?

Thanks for suggestions.

I'm not sure but someone will come to your rescue! I'm curious myself...

I don't use pellon for placemats. I like warm & natural but there are other kinds of interfacing too that are very thin. Sadly, I do not know the name of them. I know that some interfacings shrink when you wash them and then the placemat is all wrinkled because it (the fabric)didn't. I know someone else will have better answers than mine.

I would suggest "Thermore" for your placemats, that's what I and most of the quilters I know use for tablerunner's and placemats, it is quite thin, so your glasses don't tip over if they get set on the edge.
Here's a little information about it, not sure what brand I've used but you get the idea here anyway.

There is also a fusible batting that you can use too, http://www.connectingthreads.com/too...usCtnBtng.html

I use prewashed flannel in mine. Works great. When I first did it I used old bathrobs, etc. i now purchase flannel and wash before using, as it shrinks more than our quilting cottons do

I used fuseible batting...gives just enough definition for quilting

I use pre-washed flannel.

Had a good deal of shrinking using 100% cotton batting. LQS advised polyester batting for items that will be washed.
