Did I make more than 1 mistake here?
1 Attachment(s)
I am attempting to make an Ohio Star Tablerunner. I was at a quilt camp and made 2 Ohio Star Blocks. I am using the exact same pattern and instructions. I know I made a mistake with one of the fabrics... I picked up the wrong strip of yellow to re cut 2 blocks
however, did I make a mistake in the block itself?? Thank you for your help |
Oh dear... Worse than I thought! :-(
Can you post a link to the pattern you are using?
The block by itself looks "intentional." |
What ever is wrong I can't see . It looks a finished block. If you make more make them exactly the same.

It looks pretty. the 2 yellow background fabrics are close enough to each other that the mistake is not important. what will matter if you are combining this block with others is that the 'sky' part of your flying geese blocks don't touch. You might check out Ohio Star or flying geese on www.quilterscache.com. I suspect that you made the star points touch before you sewed them together, thus not touching after your seam. been there. done that.

I like it the way it is.
Pretty star block! Unless you are doing an Ohio block exchange, I would just make all the rest of the blocks the same. I like the variety in the yellow triangles.
I don't see a problem with the block but I find the square block in the middle disturbing because the flower looks upside down and throws off where your eye lands. Only my opinion.
I don't think your yellow points are big enough. Sharonve

The only thing I see is that your HST aren't as large as the one in the pattern. Other than that I don't see a thing wrong with it.
There was a star on the QB some time ago and the points of the star were small as yours are. I think the block is fine if the rest will be the same.
If you have already cut all the pieces, you could cut down the center piece to fit the size of the other pieces.
Is the center block too big? Should the points of the triangles meet at the center sides of the square? I have never made this pattern and personally avoid triangles so I am probably no help at all.

Thank you everyone!!! I suspect that there must be several variations of the Ohio Star block, or Star Block. I do agree the center block does look too large.. however, I followed the pattern instructions, checked and rechecked measurements... so apparently this must have been intentional. All the pieces are cut so I will continue to make the other 2 blocks identical to this one.
I have attached the photos from the instruction sheet. This is a block that was made by many quilters during a church quilt camp. I have not seen all the blocks we made that week put into a quilt so I am unsure how the 'points' issue is resolved. We made enough of these blocks in patriotic colors to make 3 quilts for Veterans for our area. Now my thoughts are, that I don't think I actually made a mistake according to the directions I followed... these look identical to the blocks I made in quilt camp... so I will continue on. I appreciate your input soooo much! Thank you!! |
I do like the square posted that has the longer star points!! So many choices... so little time!!
If those are the instruction that you posted, I don't think you made a mistake. So many traditional blocks, designers are taking a twist to them to make them different, just like reinventing the wheel. I think your block looks fine.
The only thing I see that I would change is the center block. It seems to over power the whole block. Otherwise I don't see a problem.
I like the star block you made. It looks more like a sawtooth star than an Ohio star to me, but names change sometimes.
From your pattern it doesn't look like you made any mistakes. I love it, mainly because I have used all those fabrics more than once and still might have some left over!!
I like it & the mix-and-match yellows look nice. As long as you have enough of the 2nd fabric to cut some more triangles with it, I think it will be a beautiful quilt. :) I really do like the variation on the traditional star. The no-tip pentagon (I guess I'm supposed to call it a 5-sided polygon) shape is really interesting.

Thank you again, everyone for weighing in on my mystery! I am totally convinced now that this is indeed a variation on the Ohio Star. As I am a relative newbie to all the different names to blocks I just assumed when it was called an Ohio Star it was ... an Ohio Star.. I sure know different now!!
Thank you again for all your great thoughts and comments!! |
Some blocks have several names.
Some names hsve several different blocks assoccisted with them. Thst's why I find an illustation helpful. |
I think it's perfect...and this is coming from a seasoned beginner, I wish I could do one as pretty as yours and the guts to take an actual glass too. You done good!

your center square is too big, there is to much space between in the center of each side.
Yes, I do agree that center block is too large. As this is a tablerunner for myself and the block is constructed and everything is already cut I will continue on. However, I will be resizing that block for future usage,...using my handy dandy 'Quick & Easy Block Tool' chart.
You can change the center block to a 4 patch and it will be great.
I'm glad you're going to finish it and be sure to post it when it's finished so we can see the result. Thanks for sharing.
luvstoquilt301; Thank you for the idea of adding a 4 patch!
jeanharville: thank you for the encouragement. |
