Oh yah, high school. Sewed own clothes in high school and when got married, sewed bride's maid dresses. Then on to motherhood, maternity outfits, then for 3 little girls till they were in high school and beyond. Never regret learning to sew. Now for FUN.

Yes, in HS in the early 50's. It's a shame the classes are no longer offered. It was a great learning experience and one I have never forgotten.

Barbshobbies 08-30-2011 11:13 AM

Yes I took sewing in home ec, no, I didn`t learn a thing. We had a teacher right out of college. We were nearly all farm kids that could cook & bake & sew (patching mostly) She thought we were pulling a trick on her when we told her there was an Angel food cake & a devil`s food cake. As freshmen were asked to cook a complete menu for the FFA banquet. What a disaster, She told us to drain the meat fat off & pour it down the lavatory, well it backed up into to the banquet room. Need I say more, she was only there 1 year. and that was 1953!

Yes, I learned in high school Home Ec. We made an apron and a shift like A line jumper dress. And I learned to cook in Home Ec as well. That was a fun class.

Oh, she didn't hate you. You were just a challenge to her and she had all of these "non-sewers" on her hand.

My friend and I were in the same boat. Our teacher didn't make us do the simple garments that the others made. But we certainly were a challenge to HER. She was an excellent seamstress, but she wanted our garments to be perfection personified. Once she was so frustrated with me that she took my garment home for her to rip. I had told her Iwas not ripping anymore. That was good enough for me. She gave me a good scolding and brought my suit home to rip the "mistakes." I loved that woman. When I finished college and was about to find a job in my field, she told me,"Always strive to do your best, but do not ruin your life by trying to be a perfectionist like I was."

I was 5yrs. old and my grandmother taught me. When I got to high school I was helping the teacher.

kolacequeen 08-30-2011 11:32 AM

I didn't sew until after I got out of college and found out I had to buy my own clothes. And here I end up with my own alterations business for 35 years. My mother could never believe it since she had to finish my 4-H projects.

No. I had to take Home Ec but hated it. I had a firsy year teacher and she did everything by the book and book only. Another classmate who also hated it had her sister so all the sewing for us. By some luck we passed the class.
I still only make clothes that I want and cant find but i love to sew crafts and quilt.

We had sewing classes in 7th and 8th grades. Weren't too succesful in teaching us to sew as there was only one sewing machine in our class. I did machine sew at home and we did do a lot of handsewing, like buttonholes.

7th grade we made a pair of pj's, began in Sept. and in June we modeled our pj's at a school assembly, how embarassing. In 8th grade we made our graduation dresses. Mine was made of organdy and you can imagine how limp and soiled it looked after handling it from Sept. to June. It had hand sewn french seams too. Gave it a good wash and starching and wore it just once for graduation and then hid it in the back of the closet.

We did learn to sew a bit in 6th grade, made an apron, hair wrap and drawstring bag for the cooking classes we were going to have in 7th and 8th grades. Even hand sewed an oil cloth cover onto a compostion book that would become our recipe book. We even learned how to wash dishes in cooking classes, I excelled in the cooking class because I had been washing dishes and cooking since I was about 8 years old.

I remember those days, I was enrolled in the business course and wasn't allowed to take courses like biology and advanced math. After all I was told by my guidence couselor I wouldn't be going to college. Well I fooled them and did go and got my degree.

MadP 08-30-2011 12:06 PM

No. I started sewing in 4-H. Also took Home Ec. in high school

Prissnboot 08-30-2011 12:09 PM

They do still teach home ec, but instead of cooking and sewing, they teach how to balance a checkbook. Some cooking and sewing still, but not as much as the olden days!

Most schools don't offer any home ec or shop courses any longer because of budget reasons. School one of my granddaughters went to used to have those courses and boys and girls could take whatever ones they wanted to. Granddaughter took both, made me a cute handsewn heart pillow and a birdhouse. She also liked to 'help' grandpa with his workwork stuff.

dunngriffith 08-30-2011 12:26 PM

I knew how to sew before home-ec. Started sewing at 12.

QuiltingHaven 08-30-2011 12:40 PM

Yes, I learned to sew and cook and entertain. I still remember Mrs. Koonz explaining how to make tomato aspic and how to sew the circular skirt (which I made in plaid...sigh) and hem it. There are times when I am sewing or cooking, I hear her talking to the class. My mom made me take Home Ec, bookkeeping, typing, and shorthand along with all the college prep courses. Thank goodness for the typing, worked my way through college as a secretary and can really really type on any computer made.

milikaa1 08-30-2011 12:41 PM

I learned or tried to in 7th grade, I attempted to make an envelope purse which was crooked and ugly so I decided from that point on sewing was not for me and it was a scary thing to do, until a few years ago and now I love making quilts.

Nancy Ingham 08-30-2011 12:42 PM

Yes, took it all four years of HS and loved it!!

luce321 08-30-2011 12:47 PM

The first thing that I made was an apron in grammar school. My Mother sewed and taught me too. When I got in high school I took sewing and cooking. I have been sewing since I was about 12 yrs old and have sewed ever since. Made all my clothes and my three girls too, even made a few for my son. I started quilting in 2004.

gigi4419 08-30-2011 12:49 PM

Yes, in High School. First project was baby doll PJ's.

DaylilyDawn 08-30-2011 01:11 PM

I learned to sew before I started school, by sitting under my mother's sewing machine extension leaf while she sewed clothing for us. I made Barbie doll clothes with the scraps from what ever fabric she gave me. By the time I was in 7th grade, I made a jumper dress. Got a B on it. Then in 10th grade I took a semester course of Textiles And Sewing. In this class I was required to make a dress with princess seams. an outfit out a napped fabric( made a corduroy pantsuit)and a plaid outfit( I made a skirt and vest and I made the vest reversible with the solid color that was in the color of the plaid . The plaid was called a window pane plaid. I learned to match plaids and I received A+ on all three outfits. This teacher taught me the difference between HANDMADE and HOME MADE. The biggest compliment any one can pay a sewer is to ask where you bought the outfit you made.

ShabbyTabby 08-30-2011 01:19 PM

No, I learned from my grandmother, my mom and my aunt. My dear grandmother could just look at a ready made dress, go home cut out a pattern from newspaper and make an exact duplicate of the store dress! My mom taught me to make some of my clothes in HS and my aunt helped me make drapes, curtains, pillow slips and even a bedspread to match my bedroom curtains. All my family sewed...I think mostly from necessity as were pretty poor when I was a child. I even remember my grandmother making me dresses out of chicken feed sacks...now that's a long time ago...LOL

Floralfab 08-30-2011 01:24 PM

I took sewing in Home Ec class. This was back in the 50's. All we made was an apron and I hated every moment of it. When I had small children I started sewing for them and myself and really loved it. It's been many yrs since then and I have not done any sewing. I would have to think hard before I could put a zipper in now.

matraina 08-30-2011 01:26 PM

I learned to sew in Home Ec. In college, I took two semesters of it, plus a semester in tailoring.

SEW 08-30-2011 01:36 PM

I was very intrigued by my mothers sewing machine, but I was not allowed near it! After, I had clocked a few hours of sewing in home ec, my mom finally let me use her sewing machine. Been sewing ever since!

Connie Rae 08-30-2011 01:46 PM

You all were lucky! I went to a small catholic school, so we didn't have Home Ec.

Cheshirecatquilter 08-30-2011 01:49 PM

Nope, my mom taught me to sew on a machine when I was 9. I made a button down blouse with one hand and turned the wheel with the other as she wouldn't let me use it plugged in. By the time we had sewing in school starting in 7th grade I was bored out of my mind with what they taught. In high school they wouldn't let college prep kids schedule the home ec classes. Too bad. There's lots of people out there who ended up not knowing anything about how to take care of themselves.

Does this resurrect memories or what! I took Home -Ec when I was in elementary school through grade 11. I lived in Montreal, Ca. so end of high-school was grade 11. I cannot remember what the curriculum was each year.
We learned to knit, crochet, sew, make garments, child's dress and slip, cooking, home making and how to make hospital corners on a bed.
We learned to knit mittens, gloves and socks. After I received my grade for my socks I wore them one day and low and behold I had a hole on the heel from my shoes. Decided never to make a pair of socks again. So, I have not made a pair to date.
I knitted my pair of gloves and a friend asked me to borrow mine so she can get a grade. No way, I told her.
As far as quilting is concerned I learned and am still learning through friends and classes. I joined a quilting guild in the Tx Valley. Happy to be on this site and learning from all of you.

I learned to sew in 4th grade (tea towel), 5th grade (apron with pockets and 6th grade we made our graduation dress(six stitches to the inch!). In high school I made yet another graduation dress. After marriage, I made most of my daughters' clothes and mine, but never attempted clothes for my husband or son. Now I do quilting.Flo

I'm the same way! I get fidgety when I don't get my sewing fix...sewing or quilting will do it!

Had "Home Ec" classes during 8th grade ....my memory is of sewing hems
on flour sack dishtowels... HA! and we were required to baste hem before
using sewing machine. That cured me from taking further classes in
high school ... and my Mother taught me basics of sewing clothes.

ButtermilkMama 08-30-2011 03:06 PM

No, I didn't go to a Home Ec class, I took all business courses. I taught myself to sew after Mom taught me how to use the sewing machine.

Interesting reading about the Betty Crocker Homemaker Awards...Even though our small high school didn't have HE classes, the senior class girls could take a test qualifying us for the award. The girl who won in my class told me years later that she felt I should have had it because I DID know how to cook! She never did care for it.

madamekelly 08-30-2011 03:10 PM

I did not learn to sew in Home Ec, I was slowly driven crazy by a teacher that had nine (count 'em 9!) steps to getting ready to put a zipper in, buttons had to be sewn in and out of each hole 20 times, and not one batch of cookies ever came out of the oven before they were burnt. (she walked real slow, and we could not ask her to check them until the timer went off!) Hated Home Ec! Love being a wife, mother, and housekeeper!

nana20010 08-30-2011 03:13 PM

yes thats were i made my first quilt

LAB55 08-30-2011 03:14 PM

Not really, my mom taught me before I was out of the 6 th grade. Many, many years ago :-D
