Which dies to get with the Accuquilt Go?
I just received my Accuquilt. I ordered the 2 1/2" die. What specialty dies would you suggest to purchase next?
|
what quilts are on your 'to do' list? I like the triangle dies.
|
I love my accuquilt. I have found that the dies I use the most are my 2.5 strip and my shaped ones for appliqué work. I have several of the squares and triangles and have not use any of them yet. I like the idea of them but most of my patterns are more strip piecing. I promised myself to try and use them this coming year and if I either don't use them or don't like them by summer I'm going to sell them and and get some more of the shapes for appliqué I keep looking at the train. I'm also thinking getting more of the strip dies like the 3.5 and 1.5 I find thoses are sizes I use a lot.
Before you buy check overstock.com they often have pretty good prices on them. Conrats and have fun with it |
I like the 5" square..make your own charms......RPTPP, winding ways,HST,QST,2 1/2" square for L&Es, on and on........I love them all!!!!!
|
Bill....thanks for that tip about overstock.com. Their prices are good!!!!!!!

Unless you know of a specific shape that it seems like you are always using, I would buy the dies as you need them for a specific project.
|
I bought several squares and rectangles that are sized to go together, which I will be using to "process" scraps. I bought rectangles that finish at 1-1/2x3, and 3x6, and squares that finish at 3", 4" and 6". I figure that gives me a nice variety for putting together scrappy 12" blocks.
I also have bought the circular rag-cut die that you use to make a sort of raggedy cathedral-window-ish block, and a long skinny"wedge" shaped die. I'm using the circular die now to cut raggy denim circles and putting fleece squares inside; I think that's going to turn out to be a warm and heavy quilt. The wedge I kind of bought on a whim, not 100% sure what I'll do with that one yet - probably more scrappy quilts. I just liked the shape! |
My favorites are the dies that cut angles accurately for me (and nub the corners to make matching easier). That means I really appreciate the tumbler dies and the triangle dies. Just ordered their new large flying geese die:
http://www.accuquilt.com/go-flying-g...-finished.html because this is the exact finished size I need for a modern quilt I want to make: http://www.fonsandporter.com/article...ng_geese_quilt (in Quilty magazine Nov/Dec 2014) I also have dies for shapes I know would be hard for me to cut, such as circles, and for specific patterns that have matching angles where a die makes the cutting easier -- e.g., hunter's star. I'm one who does not like the strip dies. I find it is actually faster and easier for me to cut strips using the June Tailor Shape Cut Plus mat and a Slidelock ruler to keep the mat and fabric from slipping (and keep my fingers protected). I should sell all of my strip dies and mats, as I really don't like them. The advice to buy dies for a specific quilt is a good one. That way you won't over-buy dies that you may never use. I checked Overstock.com and their prices are better than Accuquilt's, but they don't carry all the dies. I'm wondering if Overstock may simply have a large stack of dies purchased before Accuquilt changed their policy on pricing (which cut out all discounters and made Accuquilt the primary source for die acquisition). Overstock may not be able to keep that pricing for long. |
The BOB dies are my most used. Cut six blocks at one time. I use the 2 1/2 strip and the 6 1/2 strip die a lot.
When a lot of shops were clearance out the dies due to the no more discount on price I bought all the Go dies I wanted, some I didn't know I wanted because most were 60% - 70% off from different online shops. There are still great discount prices to be found. Just have to search for the online shops getting rid of their stock. |
My favorites are 2" triangle and the small tumbler. It's great to have the dog ears trimmed off and everything lines up perfectly! I don't have trouble cutting strips from yardage, so the strip cutters don't appeal to me, but a lot of folks love them. If you do applique, those shapes might be worth it; I don't do applique so can't speak to that.

Therefore, I also recommend you buy as you go (pun intended). With that said, I do love the 5" square, and all the strip dies. Since I am getting into the Bonnie Hunter quilts, I am repeatedly using the 2" finished half square triangle, and the 2" square dies, where I can cut 32 at a time. My other favorites are the equal lateral triangle, the wedge and the 2 tumbler shapes. But, it depends on what kind of quilts you are into making. Have fun with your Go, it really is amazing how much easier it is to cut fabric! |
I recently purchased the Multi triangle and multi-square dies and just love them. I intend to use some of the Christmas applique dies for quick Christmas gifts, but find I use the squares and triangles the most. I echo the advice to look at how you sew and what shapes you use most often to find the dies most useful for you. Most of all, have FUN with your new machine!

I like it for any of the blocks with curves, dwr, apple core and winding ways and for triangles. I had somewhere the chart that showed which dies would go together to make a 12inch block and I used that to choose dies that would work together and of course I can't find it for you now :-( .

I have the GO (3 yrs) and many dies.....and am well pleased with it...recently looked into and purchased a Sizzix big shot = to Baby GO, I guess....the dies for it are more reasonable! albeit they are smaller, and Hobby Lobby allows you to use their 40%coupon on the dies. And I understand I can use the GO dies on it.....the ones that fit anyway.....so that combo works for me....

I agree with Paper Princess - buy only when you need for a specific project. Kind of like fabric, there is something addictive about it and getting the darn dies. Those dies are expensive though, more than a yard or two of fabric. I have dies - probably 6 or 7 that I have never even opened and now I question if I will even ever use them. I use the basic squares and triangles often as well as those cute little birds (in my eye, birds make anything better) but I have never put a bird on a quilt. I do love the alphabet though but boy those were down right expensive. Other than that, I have never used the flowers, the dog, the cat, the little Christmas house etc. Make friends with someone who also has one, that is what I did, now we share.

For me, the strip dies were a waste of money. I never use them. I LOVE the log cabin die, the triangle dies and the multiple square dies, and the hexagon die. I like the smaller of the drunkards path, but the larger one was too big and not one I would have bought. It's all personal preference, and depends on what you actually use. Most of mine were gifts, so I'm grateful for ALL of them.. just like some better than others.

Buy the ones you need. Don't buy a die just because someone else says.

I love my GO. I think the strip cutters are the bread and butter of the dies. You can cut strips, squares and diamonds with them. If I o nly have to cut a couple of strips, I do it with my rotary cutter. I am just finishing #3 of a quilt that required 222 strips (for a total of 666 strips for all 3 quilts). I would never have made these quilts without the help of my GO cutter. I also made a 9 patch quilt that required a whole lot of 2 1/2" squares, and I cut all of those with my 2 1/2" strip cutter. I love cutting my borders and my bindings with my strip cutters. I also have some block dies (Hunter's Star, Winding Ways, Drunkard's Path, etc) that I love, too. And I have a lot of the applique dies for use with my embroidery designs. Did I say "I love my GO"?

There are sets of dies based on Block sizes. I started with the 12 inch block. I have all dies that work together to form a 12 inch block. Now working on 8 inch and 6 inch.
I LOVE the strip cutters. |
If I were you I would get the 1 1/2 inch strip cutter also.
|
I buy dies that are harder to cut out. I can cut out squares and strips.
|
On the accuquilt site I found the go mix and match block patterns reference chart as a download. Very handy to get dies to build blocks in the size you like to use. Sorry I have no idea how to link to a download.
