different batting

I visited my local fabric shop yesterday. The manager and I got to chatting and charity quilts came up. I expressed that I like to make them, but the batting is just too expensive these days. She told me that she made two charity quilts to compare: the first had her normal batting, the second had sweatshirt fabric for batting. After quilting, she could not tell the difference in the quilts. She says that they often have the sweatshirt fabric on the $.99 table. Next time I stop in, I'll have to check that out.

Great tip. Thanks. Buying batting is like buying gas for the car. You never get to see what you're paying for, but you must have it.

I'll have to look into that next time I'm at the fabric store, but I have never seen sweatshirt fabric that cheap.

absolutely true, sweatshirt fabric is one of the most expensive knits... the best advice i received about batts for donor quilts was from my old quilt guild... they had figured out to purchase one queen batt (90 x 108)... now fold and cut into 4 rectangles, each will be 45 x 54 so you have 4 nice sized baby quilts and/or laprobe/wallhanging... now make your quilts to fit the batts...
