Different foot for free motion quilting
Somewhere I saw a tutorial on free motion quilting. She said she uses a regular foot "#?" that normally comes with the machine, but it doesn't do the hopping. You can easily move the fabric around with feed dogs down. It was Not the darning/quilting/hopping foot. Do any of you know what I am talking about?

Not sure about one that comes with the machine, but I use a floating foot like this one.

I used it on my huskvarna Viking, and it was the R foot - or the one they used for embroidery

Often a darning foot does come with the machine. It doesn't hop as it's not spring loaded.

I have one machine that I leave the regular sewing foot on it to free motion. It's an old straight stitch machine, and I don't even have to drop the feed dogs. I just set the stitch length to zero and go.

What brand is your machine? I have FMQ hopping foot for my Bernina but I prefer to use my non hopping ruler foot for FMQ even if I am not using my rulers. I think Leah Day has a video on how to modify a hopping foot so it doesn't hop.

I believe you are talking about this foot. It does not have any spring.
It's attached like a normal foot. Click on link and scroll down to "Free Motion Quilting". That's the foot I have on my Janome 9400. I also have the spring loaded one but I prefer the plastic one as a beginner. https://www.montavillasewing.com/pro...ry-craft-15000 |

I just use my hopping foot. Would never try to modify them. I have been using it for 16 years and it works very well for me. I don't have a Janome.

I also have the spring loaded one but I prefer the plastic one as a beginner. https://www.montavillasewing.com/pro...ry-craft-15000 it fascinates me. a snap-on foot for free-motion? how convenient!!! after fishing around for waaaaay too long online trying to find it i finally realized i could just look at the manual online for the mc15000 to get the foot number. the manual shows three: Free motion quilting closed-toe foot QC Free motion quilting open-toe foot QO Free motion quilting zigzag foot QV (I have never heard of free-motion zig-zag. never occurred to me to even try such a thing. that might look pretty kewl.) I have got to try at least one of these. and experiment with using the zig-zag stitch during free-motion. heck ... i don't even know yet whether my mc8900 will even allow it. |
