A different log cabin pattern?
Our LQS is hosting a Log Cabin Challenge. Of course there is a tremendous variety of patterns out there. But a while back, one caught my eye and for the life of me, I cannot remember where I saw it.
The layout is subtly curved, not by changing the widths of the logs, but by making some of them with a dark center (so that the block has more dark logs than light) and some with a light center (so that it has more light logs than dark). Does this sound at all familiar to any of you? I have googled every description and variation I could think of. I'm hoping someone on the board has either seen it or is a better detective than I am. Help! |
Have you tried curved log cabin? Have you tried the quilt gallery? Here is link to Log Cabins (non-traditional)

Some look like balls and maybe on this pinterest page https://www.pinterest.com/pin/61783826125626426/

Antelope Canyon is a fun "log cabin" quilt.
https://www.google.com/search?q=Ante...ient=img&udm=2 I just got a Creative Grids ruler called "Skinny 10" Curvy Log Cabin Trim Tool." https://www.google.com/search?q=Crea...EY&sclient=img |
Jenny Beyer has a very different log cabin block. Years old so may look new again to some.
https://external-content.duckduckgo....7b3&ipo=images I think the pattern is free. I have a print out from years ago but no website. The quilt is called Kinabalu. |
Kinabalu is still available - via https://www.quiltingdaily.com/friday...quilting-blog/ and pdf at https://www.quiltingdaily.com/wp-con..._Kinabalu2.pdf

Years ago there was a popular one called Snake River Log Cabin in one of Judy Martin's books, Log Cabins
|
No. The only difference between this one and a REGULAR log cabin block, was that some blocks started with a dark center, making the darks predominant in that block, while others started with a light center making the lights predominant in that block. All the logs were the same width. It was the arrangement of the blocks that made the very unique and subtle curves. It is the layout that I am looking for.
Sigh. Thanks for you help. I think I'm going to have to drive myself crazy playing with a dozen or so blocks on my design wall. |
You could draw multiple blocks on graph paper - or copy them multiple times - or use EQ - to make miniature blocks to arrange.

Though that only works, if you know how to colour them in ...... Anxiously waiting to see what you create, GingerK! And curious which LQS ... I'm guessing, Maxwell? |
Yep, Quilt E, it's the only one left in the area. Markdale closed about 7 years ago, Shelburne went to online only during Covid, We even lost our Fabriclands in Orangeville and Owen Sound.
Threads that Bind in Maxwell, will be hosting a Log Cabin Extravaganza in a local arena in May. It will not be a juried show, instead viewers' choice in each catagory will win a prize. |

Yes a lot are gone. Likewise in this area too. Though you do have the one in Stayner now. Have you been to it? I haven't. Not "really" close for you but somewhat. And Creemore, too. Haven't been to it for a long time. Always liked Markdale, when I was up that way. The "new" one in Shelburne didn't last long. Come to think of it, is the "new(er)" one in Orangeville still open? Let me know when the Extravaganza event happens, and I just might get there! |
THIS is why I love this quilting board. Look how hard members try to help no matter how elusive the pattern or vague the description. Sorry, GingerK, I have no log cabin breakthrough for you but have loved seeing the examples people have found.

This is like the ball shaped one that Workbench posted, but only one block.
it has a dark center much like you described...so ....maybe?? jenny doan at MSQ did a tutorial years ago... https://saidwithlove.com.au/curved-log-cabin-tutorial/ pinterest has more here (scroll down) https://www.pinterest.com/pin/178103360266654205/ It might help to search for 'offset log cabin block' |
I'm so glad you asked this question.
I found some new, fun & interesting log cabin variations to try like this one called stairs https://mywebquilter.com/blockpatter..._by_skill.aspx and this one with snowball type corners (scroll down) https://sewofcourse.blogspot.com/201...og-cabins.html |
Ohhh I love the 'stairs' pattern! I love anything with an optical illusion! Isn't it great when the blogger posts the pattern or at least explains the concept!

I sure hope you post if you figure it out. I don't see how a log cabin could be made to curve with the same width logs even starting with different centers. About a third of the way down this page https://slaneyhandcraft.wordpress.co...uilt-tutorial/ is basically a two color block starting with different centers, but the logs are not the same width.

I, too, never had the urge---until now! Right after the new idea for a shadow box quilt...
