Different Scissors for Different Uses

I have a pair of bent blade scissors which I purchased to use when machine embroidering. The tips lay flat to the fabric surface. You can even pick a stitch w/the sharp points.

Owing to arthritic hands/fingers, I found they were easier to pick up than the ones that lay flat.

Later I used then to clip to a seam, trim threads and to trim an edge. I already knew they were sharp to the point and trimming with them was sooo nice. Now I keep them at the sewing machine and will purchase another pair to use at the ironing station.

Thank you for the tip. I have RA and have been having trouble with my hands lately and will be buying me a pair.

I love new scissors. I don't have this kind. I also want spring ones for rag quilts, if I ever decide to do one. Joann's here I come! My cutting table is an old computer desk. I use the pull out keyboard shelf, lined with a mat, for my scissor collection.

I use that type to trim threads from paper piecing!! Works great.

barking-rabbit. I bought the spring clip scissors at the dollar tree for a buck. Yea, they work, so then I went back and got a second pair. They are in the garden section. they are garden snips actually. I use them on my rag quilts and save on my good fiskars spring scissors.

I have springy snip type scissors that i bought specifically for rag quilts but now i keep them with me at all stages of sewing. They really save my fingers from a lot of aches. I hope to eventually get every available type of springy scissor.

I agree about the bent blade scissors !!! i LOVE mine....and i keep a pair of small sharp pointed for snipping threads at the machine. So many of the really nice scissors are just too heavy for these sore old hands.

I use the Fiskars scissors all the time and for seam ripping and snipping I use these(#6204) from http://www.mygoodscissors.com/ThreadNippers.htm

I have a pair of duck bill Gingher scissors that I use for when I am cutting close to the quilt.

Are these the ones you are talking about? I will be buying another pair of these too. They are super sharp and the points let me clip threads easily. I use them for all my un-sewing now and they work with a gentle squeeze. I LOVE mine.

Great idea. The dollar store is on my list if places to go during this week off work.

I use the Fiskars with the ergo handles and I love them. I have two pair and then a couple of smaller Fiskar's to keep at the sewing machine. I have the bent handled Fiskar's for rag quilts and couldn't do a rag quilt without them. Other scissors I have picked up along the way and don't care if I cut paper with and then some of those that can cut through a tin can. I use those to cut cardboard when needed.

I have the embroidery bent scissors too and love them for applique work. I use them curved towards my applique leaves and they work great. I am doing some applique work now and I have 5 pair of scissors on my table, and use embroidery scissors more than the others.

Please post a picture - I have the same problem and these sounds like they would be great.

I purchase a lot of sewing items (and others as well) from Shoppers Rule and this is where I purchased my scissors. Right now they are on special.

The last word "sear" may be search, but I pasted it and was taken to the picture and information.

I have lost count of the number of scissors and snips I have. I have them in baskets, bins, totes, and drawers. My favorite specialty scissors are Karen Buckley, Heritage rag snips, Batting scissors, and my very favorite scissors are my Dovo and Nogent scissors.

Suz 04-07-2014 09:08 AM

Please explain/show the Dovo and Nogent scissors. Never heard of them. Regarding Karen Kay Buckley, have had the privilege to sit with her as a teacher. In one course, we made a Baltimore Album quilts using an Elly Seinkiewicz book. She lives nearby and have taken three one year classes from her. Karen is a great, very talented and funny teacher. If you ever get to see one of her programs or take a course, do so. You will not be disappointed.
