Dilute the glue or use it straight from the bottle?

Which is best? To water it down a bit(how much) or right out of the bottle? This would be to baste a quilt. As always, thank you

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 07-30-2013 08:09 AM

I use it right out of the bottle.

Elmer's School Glue is on my shopping list today, so glad to hear this. I was also thinking maybe you should dilute it, but guess it's ok as is. Thank you.

I always use it straight out of the bottle--make sure the label says "washable" glue. I see that WalMart and Target now have their own brands of "washable" glue, but I'm sticking with Elmers...I know it works *Ü*

I use it straight out of the bottle.

Straight out of bottle. No special tips used.

pocoellie 07-30-2013 09:56 AM

I would dilute it, mainly because it seems that they've "reconfigured" the glue so that it's "non run", and I've had trouble just getting it out of the bottle.

EasyPeezy 07-30-2013 11:22 AM

I've used it both ways. I don't like when it's too thick so I tend to dilute it a bit.
I don't have a set formula. Try both ways and see what works for you.

Ive done it both ways! Diluted didnt stick too well with the cheaper thinner batting but worked great on thicker batting! Love doing it with glue!!!!

FYI Staples now has their brand School Glue on sale for 1 cent (1 penny).
Limit 2.

straight out of the bottle....

I like to just take off the top of my Elmer's glue bottle and use a small paint brush to apply. That way there is no 'globs' of glue and makes a smoother surface.

Ditto what TerryQuilter said. I use Elmer's and straight out of the bottle. If you dilute it, I would be afraid it wouldn't adhere like it should.

Got some at Wally World yesterday for 15 cents, 4 oz. size, no limit. Needless to say, I grabbed several.

I use it straight out of the bottle. I use the back of a spoon to flatten any areas that look a little lumpy.

Well, thanks for the tip about the spoon. I use mine straight out of the bottle but tend to get globs every now and then - I'll for sure use a spoon to remedy that next time. Sometimes I add a little water to a bottle that's almost been used up. Haven't noticed any problems so far.

I just tried this method and did very well using the glue straight from the bottle. I also tried diluting the glue 50/50 with water and that didn't work well at all (although it might have been the spray bottle I was using).

So after you get the glue on and it holds the edges together does the glue not hurt your sewing machine neddles?

Poodles 08-01-2013 06:55 PM

Sorry I misspelled some words I had 5 biopsies and some freezing done on me yesterday and since they bled so much last night I had to go back today to have 3 of them re cortirized. That medicine they deaden with makes me shake really bad. So I can't spell either.

You can dilute at least 2 to 1 with water and then use in a spray bottle. 2 or even 3 parts water to 1 part glue.

I just "Elmered" a table topper today and I used it straight from the bottle held about 12 inches high, and then drug a dampened sponge brush over the drizzles to flatten them out. Worked like a dream. If you let it dry completely it has no affect on your needle. I just finished a set of placemats and a quilted tote bag and, I'll tell you, I am in Love with Elmer!!! :p
