"Dimensional Thread Painting" Anyone Done It?

I have signed up for a class with Joyce Hughes for Dimensional Thread Painting which looks interesting.

She takes panels and does thread painting on the panels and adds "dimension" with things like tulle, from what I understand. I'm really eager to learn thread painting so hoping this class will start me on my way.

Has anyone ever taken from Ms. Hughes or have her book? Any tips?

And, any tips for good videos in the meantime that I can look at on thread painting?

Thanks, Watson

I went to a lecture by Joyce Hughes. Her work is exquisite. I bought the new book she has out and it does look like it may be a good way to introduce yourself to the technique. (I'm a sucker for quilting books and panels). I haven't cracked it open yet at home, but since you mentioned it I'll study it this week and give you my opinion. Can't think of any videos I've see on this topic offhand but someone else may have an idea.

Our LQS just had an event with her. I wasn't able to attend but the projects were beautiful.

Here is a similar example. You can see how fun it is to be free with threads.

Another one.

Do you have a couching foot for your machine? You may want to try one. You can add more dimension with different threads. Have fun!

My goodness, that looks like so much fun!

Looks like so much fun that I contacted her about doing a lecture and class for our guild. I am now that programs and education person for our guild (yes, I did take the plunge).

Sounds like a fun class! Have you seen the portraits done with tulle fabric and an iron by Benjamin Shine?

Bethanne Nemesh is another one to check out, her yarn couching projects are exquisite. She does teach, but I believe she's fairly new to yarn couching, so I'm not sure if she's developed teaching materials and a class yet.

I am so envious!! I would love to take that class! I get the feeling that you're stressing a little about it..don't..relax and have a ton of fun!! There are a lot of thread painting videos on you tube.

years ago I bought a small piece done by Julie Crabtree. She does thread painting and also now uses other media with it. The little piece I bought had a painted background and then free motion quilting on top...I was fascinated by it...I see she stays pretty to close to Wisconsin but does have some workshops....
