I want to make a DNP with 9 colors. Does anyone know how to figure out how much of each color I will need to make a full size quilt. I might just make a twin but I will get material for a full size and then I will have some left over and IF I change my mind I won't be short.
Thanks I LOVE this board. Read way to many hours on here. |
Good question!! I am going to watch for an answer!

Two questions - (1) what size do you want your "full size" quilt to be? and (2) what size patches do you want to use? (or, alternatively, what is the finished size of your 9-patch?)

There are lots of charts online that show basically how much yardage for each size quilt. Just Google for chart for quilt yardage.

How is D9P different than a 9P?? Tinker

You'll need to know the overall size of your quilt and then decide how big you are going to cut your initial squares. I usually cut my squares 6 1/2" for a D9P which means that I will be able to get six squares for every 6 1/2" strip of fabric I cut. One strip of each colour chosen would yield 54 squares which would make 6 nine patches. These nine patches would originally be 18 1/2" before cutting and after cutting would be about 17" resulting in a row of 102" long. You'd need five completed strips for a top of 85" X 102" approximately. Going back to my original math means that I will need to cut five 6 1/2" strips of every colour which is 33". Of course I'd buy one yard to allow for cutting errors. Nine yards will make your top. I hope this helps.

i personally like to make the 1 center square the same color in all the blocks of a scrappy one, to make a "pattern" in the end, when the quilt is done... 9 patch 9 patch cut..D9P |
