Being hot as Hades today I figure stay at home wrapped around the AC and to give the disappearing 9 patch a shot. Leslee pointed me in its direction at the beginning of the week and it's been playing havoc in the noodles ever since (quilter!). Have any of you played with this much?
|
I am not familiar with that one. Explain it if you would.
|
Easy! Take a nine patch, cut into quarters, rearrange and re-sew.

Cool! Make sure you share pictures. Love to see them when you are done.
|
Great Link Steve, thank you :D Post a picture of your patches, I know we would all love to see them! Now you have me thinking about some batiks I have and how this might just be a fun quilt to make with them. :?: :-) :?:
|
That is really neat. I never heard of it either. But I hve added to my to do list.
Steve< can't wait to see yours when you get it done. Thanks |
Real men quarter it on the diagonal.

Aren't you supposed to be headed to the Chili Pepper festivals in New Mexico, Tim?

Well Tim, you could, but then it would be something all together different. It might be an nice for a future project, though for now looking at the sixteen is enough for my eyes.
Got the initial rotary cutting done and am sewing the nines next. |

  What you wind up with is a mini variation of YBR. That Steve, is a pattern you might investigate some day, or of course Patrices "Road to Freedom", another fine example of multi-sized and placed blocks she designed herself. tim in san jose |
Well, for me it's all worth the thought though. Twisting around ideas to create is something almost par for the quilting course. Besides, it’s fun to see what will happen if you throw the switch and just add a bit of lightning.
I just noticed my "strings" are already collecting up. I'd not even given it a thought before, but the string quilt will, out of necessity, happen too. Fun! |
Got a few patches done and though a bit frustrating at first, it ended up kind of fun. I gave a go at chain piecing and that was interesting and time saving. The thing with the disappearing 9 patch is that the small squares tended well, to disappear. I was working with three-inch squares, but suggest at least five inches. It will be fun when I've got a couple dozen patches to lay out and play with.
Mostly it was weird cutting up fabric, sewing it together, cutting it up and sewing it again. I really felt the part of a mad scientist gone amuck with fabric. It showing all the promise of a pretty nice quilt. |

It's beautiful.
This new quilt should be more colorful than the last, or at least more for a child in my mind. Blues and yellows in abundance; I wonder how I'm going to quilt it though. Very small no doubt! |

I saw this technique on another site http://quiltingpassion.com/blocks/pieced/ninepatchvariation/index.html.
I tried it with an existing 9 patch that I made from scraps when I first learning to make a 9-patch. I'm very new to quilting. Just started this year. I really like it and can't wait to make a lap quilt out of it. 9patch variation |

Well...
I put six together and they got a little wonky, but the technique is interesting. The hardest part is ending up with a lot of cornering squares at odd places and the differing fabrics of course stretching at different paces. Still it was a fun experiment and I might go ahead and use it. Does it look too off? Disappearing 9 |
Could a lot of the flaws be hidden with an in the ditch quilting pattern?
|
Awesome Steve.... I love the design and the colors :D :D :D Doesn"t look that far off to me....
|
tndrsroni, Pretty colors, love the combination....post pictures when you get it done :-)

I do see the "wonky" ness you are referring to...however...I've had that happen with a few squares and then I added more and the wonky went walking! so give it some more and see what happens....maybe square things up as you go??? just a thought?
ps.....colors are awesome!!! |
I nearly blew it off as a good idea until everyone at work commented on how beautiful it was, now I feel compelled to go ahead and work it up to a quilt. Looking at it now, I can see where a child would love the colors and activity. |
Can't wait to see it done, it will be a lucky child who gets this :D
|
Thinking of putting a paper pieced bee in the center of all the flowers when I get to that point.
I still haven't got a clue as to a decent quilting pattern. It will be a bugger with all those seams. |
Didn't I hear you say paper piecing was a future interest? Here is a bumble bee..........

Thanks Amma! I've already found a bee in a quilting magazine that looks a little easier than the one they had on the link, but I appreciate it. I went ahead and book marked it for future reference.
I might try and piece it on Sunday, though think I should go ahead and finish all the D9's first. :D |

I love it!! It would make an awesome quilt for a toddler bed!! tndrsroni I really love your purple and black version...two of my favorite colors to boot. Can't wait to see both of them finished!
|
Steve instead of quilting it why don't you just tie it. I think that it would look great as a tied quilt.
Barb |
I've not a clue as to what a tied quilt is, please explain. :?:
|
You make a single stitch with a heavier thread and tie it into a knot at specific intervals to hold the front, batting and back together. This technique is used instead of hand or machine quilting.
|
Ah, I thought that was called tacking. I did this with a church group my Aunt is a member of while on vacation last summer.
|
I love how you so excited about quilting and have people in mind for quilts. Also that you are taking your projects to work!
It looks real nice so far and yes, I believe a child or a lot of grown-ups, would like it! |
