Has anyone made a DNP using a layer cake, making your nine patches 30 inchs square? that seems it would leave to big of a patch, if you have, can you direct me towards pictures or post some pictures? thanks.

I was thinking the same. I bought some on connecting threads to try this out but haven't had time. Anxious to hear responses!!!

You can do the d9p with any size squares you want but the larger the beginning squares the less squares it would take. However, the larger squares will show off a special fabric better. Also, the larger the beginning squares the less patchworky (word?) the quilt will be. Clear as mud? :)

If you have layer cakes and want smaller square just cut them in 4ths to make charms.

I was thinking of trying that. It would be very quick to put together!

I have a friend who purchases Layer Cakes specifically for the D9P. She says that's the easiest way to make them.

And this is precisely the reason I'm currently working on a D9P with 7" squares (bigger would have been great, but 7" was the most efficient use of the yardage I had). One of my fabrics has a goooorgeous large-scale birds-and-flowers print and I really wanted to highlight that.

If it's a smaller print, I'd probably whack 'em down into quarters. Smaller prints kind of lose their punch in large, unbroken spaces.

I just posted question some were else on useing nine 10 inch blocks to get a 30 inch ( wanted larger squares) will formular work out o.k to fit a queen size. Also iwas thinking of useing pretty shades of batisk. How many different colors would look good . Thanks lori

Check out Slice of Life quilt in MSQC Block magazine, issue 4. Jenny may have a YouTube on it. You put together the 9 layer cake pieces with 2 1/2" sashing between them. Then cut each huge 9 patch in half. I'm just finishing one and am pleased with it and it was a great way to use a pretty layer cake. I will try postin a picture later this week.

There's an MSQC tut on it. I personally cut them into 4 x 5" charm sets first.

I love layer cakes and fat eights, Fat quarters are a pain in the butt for me.
