What's a safe way to throw out needles & blades so they don't end up harming some sea bird in a landfill somewhere?

TanyaMas 07-14-2010 08:04 AM

empty medicine bottles seem to work well... as do film canisters....
i think any bottle/jar with a lid works :D

I use anything that is not a recylable item. These do end up in recycle centers and we don't want to harm any of the workers. :D:D:D

call your local waste management company. I'll bet they can tell you what to do.

What a great tip. I hadn't thought of that. I'm calling mine when we get home.

I think you can drop them into any sharps containers that are in a lot of bathrooms these days. Your local health center can help, too.

ksea 07-14-2010 08:19 AM

I take mine to the doctors office with me and put them in the sharps container there, or if I know a resturant has a sharps container I take them with me when I go out to dinner.

the odd thing about you meantioning this... i have a sharps container in my nightstand for my med needles lol... not sure why it never occurred to me to put my sewing needles in it too lol

im so slow sometimes lol

We have an old fashioned Med. Cabinet. It is built into the wall, and has a little "slit" in the back that you can drop razor blades in. I put all those sharp things in that. Goes way down behind the wall, and will take forever to fill up! The only way the sharpies will ever harm anyone (or anything, unless we get a mouse!) is if someone remodels the bathroom and takes the wall down. That ain't gonna happen in MY lifetime!

I don't toss my sewing machine needles. I use them to hang pictures or what ever on wAlls makes much smaller hole and are strong. Pull out with plyers.

well, aren't you clever?!

sewgull 07-14-2010 09:29 AM

I bet you could get a sharps container from doctor or pharmacy. I always straight pins to hang things on the wall. Makes a small hole that can be painted over. I your are renting sure leaves less to have to reapir before moving.

Personally I use a small jar. Sharps containers work too.

gale 07-14-2010 10:16 AM

I use an empty altoid tin. I also do papercrafts so I end up with exact knife blades to toss as well.

mlaceruby 07-14-2010 10:19 AM

Having removed those medicine cabinets from a bathroom, twice, I can tell you that there is a cross piece at the base of the cabinet on which all those nasty razor blades sit...filthy, rusty, and disgusting but still VERY sharp. Please reconsider your disposal method. A small sharps container from the drug store is less than $5.00 and will hold years worth of sewing sharps safely.

Deborah12687 07-14-2010 10:38 AM

I just take my pins to a local recycler in a jar when I go recycle my pop cans etc and I just give the jar to the attendant. I wonder if it is a good idea to put the pins in a sharps bin as some times the pins contain alumanum were as the needles are solid steel.

Tink's Mom 07-14-2010 02:39 PM

I have an empty pill bottle on my table and just take it with me to the Dr's. to empty into the sharps container.

nana pat 07-14-2010 02:59 PM

empty medicine bottles marked with a label

nana pat 07-14-2010 03:03 PM

Tanya,
OMG, I cant believe that never crossed my mind, I have two of them in my closet for my insulin needles.

manyana 07-14-2010 03:16 PM

I take mine to work when I have a few and place in sharps container.

Please disregard this post. Apparently not a good idea.

maryb119 07-14-2010 03:41 PM

I use an empty medicine bottle and label it.
