I've been doing a $5 BOM at my lqs. The quilt is Marti Michell's American Beauty. I joined late and guess I missed the part about requirements for finishing. According to the instructions, we have to buy the Marti Michell Drunkard's Path Template Set #8960; Large Diagonal Set Triangle Rule #8968 and the Sashing Star Tool Set#8114. This gets pretty expensive, plus the finishing kit (fabrics) is not cheap. I'm not liking using the templates at all so I really don't want to buy more of them! If any of you have done this quilt, is there a way to finish up without having to buy all those rulers/templates? Thanks

Can you borrow from someone?

I passed on that BOM bc I didnt want to buy the templates.

I did notice that Joanns.com sold some of them and you could use their 40% coupon on them.

Good Luck!

Look at the rulers and see if you have some that will do the same thing. Often the special ruler makes the process easier and quicker. the ruler may be the same as another but under a different name.
Analyze the design/process and improvise.

I seldom need the rules that they recommend. I have many I have never used. I have a few favorites and stick to them. If you need a special line to follow, use tape to mark the line.

Thanks, y'all! I hadn't thought about the possible JoAnn's option. Will investigate. I did think about sharing, but I'm fairly new here & have no friends. Poor, poor, pitiful me!

rulers ansd templates are expensive but I have found them useful at times.

I am doing the Romance one and if I do not have I just cut out the paper one and put a ruler at edge and cut out the pieces and go from there I could not buy all the ruler either

Hmm,in her printed patterns she always includes printed versions of the rulers so you could make cardboard templates. Sounds like this is not the case for the BOM. I will say that her drunkard's path templates are really nice because both curves are set up as "outies" making it very easy to cut, but you need to follow the instructions.
I would see if I could borrow some, or buddy up with someone & you buy one template she buys the other...

Well poor pitiful you --- keep on quilting and you'll have a ton of friends!!!! Your BEST friends will be here! I'm with the others -- I don't buy all the rulers that patterns call for. If the rulers I have don't work, then I trace the pattern (if possible) on paper and cut it out. Another option is talk to the local quilt shop, tell them you can't afford to buy all of them and ask if they have any you can use in the shop. Some of the shops are VERY willing.
