I think seeing the quilting on the back is important. As long as it is birthed then quilted, it would work. But it is best to check the show rules.

I'm with Feline Fanatic about the birthing (paragraph 2); which is why I tend to stay away from that process. Yes it's more work/trouble? to put binding on and hand stitch it down but it looks better to me. If you don't want the binding to show then facing it to me would be the next best option.

Never heard of the term birthing. Can someone explain what that is?

Birthing is when you put your quilt together "inside out", you sew around 3 sides, or leave an opening on the 4th side and pull the quilt through so that the top is the right side out, the backing is the right side out and the batting is in the middle.

I typically have the batting layer first, then the pieced top right side up on top of the batting, and the backing inside out on top of the pieced top. Once you "birth it" everything should be the correct orientation.

Knife edge looks essentially the same but typically you turn the seam in and then like blanket stitch the outer edge or sometimes just a narrow machine sewn seam.

Don't do much of this technique any more but I used to do all my baby quilts for the first 10 or so years like that. Now I'm all about the French double fold continuous bias binding.
