Saw a color tool earlier on a tute and wondered about getting one to help with choices, instead of how I think it looks in my pea-brain. Do u use one??

pocoellie 08-05-2011 11:55 AM

I don't, but if you need help with colors, then try it.

nyelphaba 08-05-2011 12:02 PM

I have tried to use it, but it doesn't help me- I can't get it right. I just go with what I like and what makes me happy. My rule of thumb now is- if I see the colors together in my garden, and in nature - I use them.

Oooh, I like that.

katier825 08-05-2011 12:23 PM

I don't use one. I have no fear of color! LOL I do change my mind sometimes as I go along though...sometimes something looks find in a pile, but not so much in the completed project.

One thing that some people don't realize is that you don't have to exactly match colors in quilts. You don't have to have the same colors in each fabric either. If you pick a focal fabric, then start working off of that adding colors that blend (not exactly match), and vary the scale of the prints, it's easier to come up with a combination.

amma 08-05-2011 12:43 PM

Yes sometimes, but most of the time I rely on my focal fabric(s) :D:D:D

trif 08-05-2011 12:51 PM

I have never used one. I figure it's my quilt, so my choice, any color goes...just have fun. No quilt police lurking about, hehehe

fabric_fancy 08-05-2011 12:53 PM

i have one for years now and have yet to ever use it.

i don't have a problem with color.

Judging from your avatar, you don't need one! Love the colors.

sewmary 08-05-2011 12:56 PM

I agree. Your avatar quilter is beautiful.

I have never used a color wheel - always go with what I think looks best. My quilt!

Thanks. Sometimes I second guess myself. Usually after adding the batting and back, I am pleased. Always fun looking for the perfect fabric.

lastest strip is batiks, but not the border.

No. I am tone deaf, but have the "color" eye.

Tuesday, I selected a fabric at LQS, and wanted a variety of others to go with it, picked 6. Store has fabric by color, not collection. Got home & 3 were from the focus fabric collection.

I can also "remember colors". Pick out a fabric in a store to match something at home. It does.

MadQuilter 08-05-2011 01:15 PM

No, I seem to have a pretty good eye and I had some art classes. When I get stumped, DH comes to the rescue.

the casual quilter 08-05-2011 04:48 PM

I don't. I just fly by the seat of my pants.

alikat110 08-05-2011 04:53 PM

Just my eyes!

I have a color tool and have never used it; it seems to confuse me. I spend hours choosing colors and I am quite happy doing it.

ksea 08-06-2011 04:49 AM

I don't believe there is right or wrong in color choices, if you like the way it looks than it is right for you!!!

Ditto - you may find you get better at it (or more confident with your choices) and then you can discard it.

Cindy2sew 08-06-2011 05:13 AM

This is one reason I don like to buy fabric on-line. I like to see it in person. Touch it, feel it, hold it up against other fabrics. Yes, I have ordered on line but only after I have seen it in person or in comes from a coordinating collection.

When I have trouble picking out colors for a quilt what I do if find a fabric with a colorful design that fits the color scheme I am going for. On the selvege, there are dots for the printers, but I use them to track down other fabrics with that color. Sometimes, I don't even use the original fabric.

Everything goes with green. It is Nature's way.

I discovered the Ultimate 3-in-1 Color Tool and used it to choose fabrics for an illusions class. I started with my border fabric and chose nine colors that played nicely with it. I don't know how I ever picked fabrics without it.

I've attached a closeup of one block and the finished top.

Do you mean the Illusions Sampler? It's not a pattern, it's Karen Combs technique. In the class we learned how to take a common block like Jacobs Ladder or Snails Trail and transform them into cube illusions.

We were supposed to only pick one block, but I couldn't decide on just one so I made a sampler. Some of the blocks are my original designs. It was alot of fun to make.

Somerset Val 08-06-2011 12:37 PM

I also use the 3-in-1 Colour Tool and find it a great help - and I also use the colour dots on the selvedge.

patdesign 08-06-2011 01:51 PM

Nope, I have an exceptional ability when it comes to colors and have been an Interior designer for over 35 years. I also used to oil paint, and there is nothing like hands on to get a feeling for your color, just trust your instincts.:)

cjsparks 08-06-2011 02:14 PM

I agree about using the color dots. It gets rid of the pattern and you only see the color. Also staying in a fabric line can help. Some of my Moda from 3 years ago still work well with today's.
