It depends. Mostly no plan. I buy it because I love it and just know that someday....

grandme26 01-04-2012 10:45 AM

I buy for a planned project but then add to it as I go along.

lklos303 01-04-2012 11:41 AM

Not anymore. Trying to eliminate the stash.

I usually have a plan in mind for the fabric I buy. To me certain quilts need certain fabrics. If I bought everything I liked I'd have to add on to my house for it. Hmmmm....maybe that's not such a bad idea. LOL!! :)

I never have a quilt planned when I start shopping for new fabric.....it always leaves me in a pinch with not enough of at least one fabric. Then I spend days trying to figure out how to remedy the situation, all the while swearing this will never happen again....and of course it does!

The first place I go when entering any fabric store is the remnant bin. Often it is the ONLY place I go. These are, quite obviously, not planned purchases. If I need something specific I buy it. Otherwise I mostly just shop my stash. I am a scrap happy girl and thirty years of collecting a bit of this and a bit of that give me enough variety. I also pick up pieces here and there from all of you too. It works for me. The way I see it - every purchase is a splurge - and a present for me. I deserve it!

Something I read in another post got me wondering. How many of you actually have a project in mind when you buy fabric? I have to admit that I NEVER have a plan for new fabric. I buy it if I love it or if I think it would be a good blender with what I already have, and if it is on sale of course. I scan all my fabrics (at least that's my goal -- not quite there yet) into EQ6 and use it to match up fabrics for a particular project.

Ditto for me! Although, I haven't started scanning fabrics on the EQ7 but eventually I'll get there! My stash has grown so much that I forget I have a particular fabric and end up buying more, LOL!

I no longer buy fabric without a plan. In fact I rarely buy fabric because I have an obscene stash!

nclauri 01-04-2012 04:32 PM

I have a limited budget so when I shop for fabric it is with a specific project in mind. I also only buy just enough to finish. I am usually crossing my fingers that my binding makes it all the way around. Because of buying just enough I have no stash.

EskapetheNorm 01-04-2012 04:38 PM

To throw my 2 cents in ... have a medium size stash now, so will buy a fabric without a plan if it is a really good deal. Otherwise, only buy to finish a project.

I'm with you Ms. Mare. I buy what I like. Take your JoAnn 50% off coupon and buy a couple yards a month.

i buy fabric for no reason other than i like it. when i purchase for a project, i often choose from my stash rather than what i bought. fabric is my weakness.:D

This is how I do it. However, I used the "newbie" line as to why my stash was very small, amazing how quickly it grew and I am no longer sure what all I have! Just mentioned today that I need to slow it down, no more room at the inn. But it's so much funnnnnnn......

Since I usually buy fabric at garage sales or thrift stores, I rarely have a particular quilt pattern in mind. It's a good thing that I prefer scrap quilts.

Scissor Queen 01-04-2012 08:12 PM

I always plan to use any fabric I buy. I don't always have a specific pattern in mind though.

nanbue 01-04-2012 08:18 PM

I buy what I like. That gets me thinking about what I want to do and then I get excited about doing something. So its the fabric that drives me. Not so much a particular project that I plan for. I dont like to have too much around, but I love fabric so I always have too much. lol...

LadyElisabeth 01-04-2012 09:08 PM

When a fabric just hits me, I buy it usually with no idea what I will be using it for. Now that I am on a (senior)limited budget, I am using up a lot of my over 300 bolts of fabric. I used to buy whole bolts at a time. Not so much anymore:)

QuiltingCrazie 01-04-2012 10:22 PM

I buy now with a plan, in the past I just bought because I liked it and have found when I've been trying to use the fabrics now I didn't buy enough!! I used to buy 1/2 yard of each print....not that I don't like wall hangings but I love quilts to cuddle under! so advise min. buy 2 yards if your buying for later....might help some addictions because that will add up fast with prices today..

SusieQ54 01-04-2012 11:15 PM

I buy without a plan about 85% of the time. The first place I look when I stop in any fabric store is in the remnant bin. I bought 1/2 to 1 yard lengths to build my stash, which has grown to a good size. Like others I buy fabric that I like and just have to have! I use my 40% off coupon at Joann's about twice a month and try to keep my fabric purchase under 3 yards at a time. I also check for usable fabric at thift stores and garage sales. I'm afraid I've acquired the fabric addiction! I have made a resolution for this year not to buy any more fabric until I make a dent in my stash. Like the idea of cutting some of my smaller pieces into 2 1/2" strips as this might inspire me to use some of this fabric instead of just storing it!

mayday 01-04-2012 11:49 PM

Used to which was very stupid and wasteful, look how many members de-stash, presumably at a loss,so why do it?

quiltingcandy 01-05-2012 08:43 AM

Sometimes when I buy fabric my only plan is: I plan to use it, just not sure how.

I have the same addiction - love this fabric, it will make a nice quilt - hmmmm but what pattern do I use ?? Add it to the stash !! My stash is like bunny rabbits (if you know what I mean!)

probles 01-06-2012 09:45 AM

I am like you. I purchase fabric because I love it. I usually do not buy coordinating fabrics until I get a pattern in mind. That is why my stash is so big. I do love to have a pattern and go to purchase the fabric just for it. It makes me feel like I am well on my way. Problem is I do not always come home and get started on the quilt. The supplies often sit in the bag until I have finished already started projects. Though occasionally I just stash other projects and start the new one. That is when I add to my UFO list.

Panchita 01-06-2012 10:42 AM

Um, I buy both with and without a plan. My stash is pretty small right now, and I'm trying not to spend too much on non-essentials at present, but in the normal run of things if I love it and I have the finances I'll get it. I figure that as long as I'm not buying fabric for the sake of it, or stuff I don't like (e.g. because it's cheap) then it'll work out in the end.

:)
