Maybe I just need a mental distraction right now - dreaming about quilts seems ridiculous since I haven't even made my first yet, but in 2011 we'll have our 25th anniversary and I keep thinking about how cool it would be to make a quilt with all sorts of pics - pieces of fabric - w/prints that remind us of different memories from our life together. It could have a house on it, a block with salamanders for the trip to the Smokies where we hired a naturalist who took us on an awesome salamander walk, an eiffel tower for our trip to France, even golden yellow maple leaves which is what I remember from our wedding day, and of course things like Winnie the Pooh and Lightning McQueen since ds is now here, owls from an awesome camping trip.... I could just keep dreaming.... and I just saw the attic window pattern - wouldn't that be cool to use?! It could be like you're looking into the window of our lives and seeing all these different things....
Maybe it's just an excuse to start looking for more fabric - I have a scavenger hunt to start now!

trupeach 11-24-2009 10:02 AM

if i didn't dream of quilts to come, the fabric and patterns I will use I would go out of my mind with worry about everyday things in life. Thinking of quilts to come is a great distraction.

shaverg 11-24-2009 10:05 AM

I am always dreaming about quilts to come.

charismah 11-24-2009 10:19 AM

I dream about quilts too! It is part of the creative process and some of best ideas have come from that! I try to sketch them out in a notebook and write down my ideas of fabric for them too! Just in case I don't have time to sew them right now. I can also tweak patterns as I go along ...or look for other ideas while I am waiting to put the sketch into action.

Naturalmama 11-24-2009 10:25 AM

An idea book sounds perfect! I should do that. I think I need to go "right-brained" regularly to escape! I always have to have something to go off on, and now it seems to be fabric and quilts....

MadQuilter 11-24-2009 10:28 AM

Absolutely, my head is full of ideas and techniques and color combos I want to try.

alaskasunshine 11-24-2009 10:36 AM

One time I saw a quilt in my mind and quickly drew it out and asked my husband what he thought and he encouraged me to make what I saw. It came out stunning. I was thrilled to be able to make what I saw. Several months later I was looking through a quilt catalog and there it was my "thoughts" in someone elses' pattern. Oh my word I was like...what the heck? How'd they see what I saw? Oh wellsers

The man it was made for criied & cried. He did not know I was making it for his family. I had posted the pix on an earlier post. So "yup, I do dream quilts"

Ninnie 11-24-2009 10:47 AM

I always dream about quilts. I have worked out problems this way LOL

CrystalKicks 11-24-2009 12:22 PM

I have a hard time falling asleep at night thinking about projects I want or would love to do :)

craftygma47 11-24-2009 12:27 PM

Not just quilts but embroidery patterns, too.

Jim's Gem 11-24-2009 01:41 PM

You bet. Especially right now cause I can't sew!

Pzazz 11-24-2009 02:21 PM

Always always always!!!! If not for dreaming of quilts to be, think how dull and boring life would be when we are not actually quilting something!!!!! My DH teases me that this is my "quilt porn". LOL

quiltsRfun 11-24-2009 02:28 PM

It's one of the things that feeds my addiction. :-)

Too funny, when I have trouble sleeping, I start planning quilts in my head and before I know it, the alarm is going off. 8)

sewjoyce 11-24-2009 02:42 PM

Doesn't everybody dream about quilts?? :D

Rosalie 11-24-2009 02:55 PM

Half the fun is in the anticipation don't you think? Then in the making of the quilt it very rarely comes out exactly the way I planned, but develops along the way. Dreaming definitely acts as a spring board though, to the ideas that follow. :)

Damkina 11-24-2009 02:55 PM

I certainly do... There's a list as long as my arm with these dream quilts.

katier825 11-24-2009 03:05 PM

I dream about quilts to come constantly! Not only that, I think I must be shopping in my sleep! Where else would all this new fabric come from??? LOL

dojo36 11-24-2009 07:09 PM

u know what ladies? all this time i thought i'd slipped a cog or two, but after reading all this, i've decided i'm normal - well, almost anyhow.

littlehud 11-24-2009 07:28 PM

I dream of quilts too. Sometimes it's just fabric. Those are my really good dreams.

Sheila Elaine 11-24-2009 09:03 PM

Don't have time to read all the replies, but believe me I have to think long before cutting new fabric. Made too many mistakes before, so don't like to make mistakes. So dream on, dream on.

Pats8e8 11-25-2009 12:37 AM

I don't dream about them, but lay awake at night thinking about them & planning them, then can't get to sleep. Would day dreaming be considered dreaming??

Flying_V_Goddess 11-25-2009 12:45 AM

Usually its the opposite. Typically, quilts to come is what keeps me awake at nights at times. I have come up with some very complicated quilts for the future and sometimes I couldn't get to sleep because I'd get the urge to get up and figure out all the mathematical or artistic details or feel that if I didn't do it now I'd never find the time or completely forget what I was supposed to do in the first place. But whenever I quilt or plan quilts I always have a DVD on to listen to. On my second quilt, I had back to back Gundam Wing episodes playing and there were times I'd go to bed and dream about interactions with the characters in the show. lol.

Rosalie 11-25-2009 01:04 AM

Absolutely ! :)

I made a quilt for my husband for our 45th anniversary. It was from places we had been in the past 45 years, culminating with the center square being our home and paths (running stitch) to where our families came from. I used natural muslin and embroidered the outline of the states and then free hand or tracing, did the memory stuff - like grasshoppers from South Dakota when our cabin was being invaded by those marauding bugs, Chopsticks from Chicago, water lily from the Amana Colonies, Hoover Dam from when we were in Las Vegas, etc. I embellished it with a glass blue bead representing our 45th year (sapphire) and gold thread for the coins from the casinos, both in Nevada, New Jersey and Minnesota. It was a long project, but it turned out just perfect. That way you get exactly what you want and your embroidery is just as good as already printed fabric - if not moreso. Everything was totally related to our 45 years. Actually, I drew a picture of our home with the three paper birch trees. Anyone would know what it was. That was my project. It was sashed, bordered and then I did the shadow for the quilting. He loved it! Edie

Ohhh, I would love to see it! I have planned and replanned a quilt in my head for a trip my hubby and I took from CA to PA this summer. We hit 12 LQS's in 9 states in 12 days, would like to take the fabric from each place and make a block for that state. Also have some Rt. 66 material as we followed that for some of the trip.

You have inspired me to continue to dream and plan this quilt by telling of your quilt. Thank you!!!!

Edie 11-25-2009 05:52 AM

Ithink a dream is something a wife and mother has to keep them sane! I dream that I will get all my cooking done today so I can really enjoy tomorrow. Hey, it's coming true - It is 7:51 AM and I am more than half done with what I have to do today and then I can sew. What more do we need????? Edie

Can't forget the light of my life - my dream - my husband!

Exactly what I was going to say - I would LOVE to see a picture!!!!! Sounds so wonderful!

I am sitting here sewing away and got to thinking after hours of food prep for tomorrow. I am thankful that I can quilt, I am thankful that I caught on to it (not counting all the mistakes yesterday, today and tomorrow, I am thankful for my Mother (93) who taught me how to quilt, I am thankful for my little space to do my quilting, I am thankful for my 12 year old stash , I am thankful for my husband who always says "This is better than the last one" and I am thankful to all of you who have helped me with my questions (What is a ribbitt?) and what I have learned from other questions. So Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! Edie

lacikat 11-26-2009 08:17 AM

My quilts are usually from daydreams, rarely do I follow a pattern. I love to make the quilt tops but not as much fun to put them together. Once I do complete it though I enjoy the sight of it. I only quilt the smaller projects, my bigger ones I tie off as this was something my mother and I used to do and for some reason it makes me feel close to her again, (she
passed 20 years ago).

Edie 11-26-2009 08:36 AM

God Bless our Mothers and their legacy to us! Edie

I agree, if I didn't have my quilting hobby to take my mind away from issues of the day, news on TV, worry about family/friends' health I would be a puddle of trouble. You can only scrub the kitchen for so long to take your mind off things, fabric and sewing take you to a whole other planet. Maybe that's why we love it so much, it's the only thing we have total control of, the colors, the patterns, etc.

Boston1954 11-26-2009 03:01 PM

You are NOT alone. I dream of future quilts ALL THE TIME!!! Maybe that is why I have so many UFO's................

lass 11-27-2009 04:38 AM

When I have trouble going to sleep I count pieces instead of sheep, and quilting designs and colors and my stash ......

Bev 11-27-2009 05:35 PM

I not only dream of quilts, if not every night, at least once or twice a month, but I am constantly thinking of or planning my next quilt in my mind. When I'm trying to get to sleep I set up a quilt project in my head, and before I realize it I'M off to la-la land. I have mentioned this to others in my bee and a number of them said similar things. I think it's the artistic side of the brain that brings all this about. Maybe artists through the centuries have done this too. I know that there are writers who have dreamed a whole story plot, then woke and wrote it down. Isn't that just about the same thing??

Jeannie 11-29-2009 05:40 PM

I may go to bed with something on my mind and wake in the middle of the night with the solution...get up and put it together in the am. Works for me!

earthwalker 11-29-2009 06:01 PM

Yes...I dream quilts and imagine colours and textures....write it down, sketch and colour...journal....then hopefully create...All these things are keeping my mind active when my body isn't quite up to speed. Day dreaming is getting to be a habit...there I am with a faraway look in my eyes and my husband says...they get done quicker if you actually sit at the machine!

Mousie 11-30-2009 03:54 PM

whether awake or asleep, absolutely I dream of quilts. It's an all the time thing for me. If it's not quilts, it's grandbabies...and that leads to thoughts of being able to teach them to quilt. I would think anybody else was obsessed to think of something so much, but to me it is second nature, and like trupeach said...without it...all the negs of like would creep in. It's my sanctuary! :)

shequilts 11-30-2009 05:42 PM

I never quilt dreaming of my next quilt. I'm always eager to finish whatever I'm working on so I can get on to the next project.
I do have a little quirk about my quilting though, since I like to design my own quilts and do so without actual patterns. I have to "build " it in my mind, from beginning to end. My husband gets annoyed at me for not actually starting on a project when I keep telling him, "I'm working on it." You'd think he'd understand....
