I use a dry hot iron to iron my fabric. I noticed some people here use steam which is understandable. But I also use Best Press spray while ironing and it really gets out wrinkles the best for me. (You can get it without fragrance). What do you use for ironing your fabric - steam or not?

OWALK718 09-01-2011 12:10 PM

I use an old $2.99 (thrift store) Sunbeam dry iron.

ckcowl 09-01-2011 12:11 PM

i NEVER put water into my irons- i keep a water bottle on the end of my ironing board- if my fabric needs a little spritz- and i don't want to use starch or sizing- i just pick up the spray bottle and give it a spritz----no hot drips- no leaking iron- has worked well for me for 45 years.

jljack 09-01-2011 12:12 PM

I use dry unless I have lots of wrinkles, then I spray a little water or spray starch.

Thanks for this tip. I need a spray bottle for water in my sewing room. Off to Walmart after work.

Conniebury 09-01-2011 12:31 PM

I normally use a dry iron, but if I need a little extra something, I put water in it.

DebraK 09-01-2011 12:34 PM

dry

fabric_fancy 09-01-2011 12:37 PM

dry but i do use spray starch.

brushandthimble 09-01-2011 12:46 PM

odd man out here; I use spray starch and steam

Murphy 09-01-2011 12:47 PM

Dry iron; best press.

grammy Dwynn 09-01-2011 12:49 PM

steamer here

BUT I make sure and PRESS not iron, esp. when pressing 45 degree seams!

nannyrick 09-01-2011 12:57 PM

I also use steam and starch.

monkicat 09-01-2011 12:58 PM

I use a very hot iron, and always have a spray bottle with plain water next to me.

Not so odd - me too

beaniekins 09-01-2011 01:42 PM

I use a dry iron and a spray bottle of water for stubborn wrinkles.

Another oddball here. Steam and starch.

I do the exact same thing.

dry iron and Magic Sizing

Melrose R 09-01-2011 02:21 PM

I use a steam iron when needed. Then when the water runs out, I use a dry iron. If I need a shot of steam after the water runs out, I use a shot of spray starch!

I do the same. I never put water in the iron.

nyelphaba 09-01-2011 03:40 PM

Steam and starch.

daisydawg 09-01-2011 03:45 PM

I have a dry iron I bought years ago from a place called Vermont Country Store.

Very hot iron with steam; sometimes spray as well.

To me, it's not the steam that distorts, but the presser.

I'm a steamer too.

Same here! I have an old Black and Decker travel iron that has a stainless steel bottom. If it gets "stuff" on the plate, I clean it with Dow bathroom cleaner and one of the non-stick, blue scratchers while still warm. Magic sizing doesn't stick like starch or leave flakes on the fabric.

susie-susie-susie 09-01-2011 04:06 PM

I use steam and Best Press. I love Best Press, but it makes me cough. I have tried several "flavors" and they all make me cough. I tape a kleenex over my nose and mouth, it helps. I hate to stop using it, but I think I should.

I usually fingerpress first then PRESS (not iron) the seam.

Dolphyngyrl 09-01-2011 04:11 PM

steamer

IrishNY 09-01-2011 04:35 PM

I use a dry iron.

SittingPretty 09-01-2011 04:45 PM

Usually steam. Have even spritzed with water if steam still not enough, or I'll use steam and starch.

I do this, too. Also, I got tired of buying distilled water. Our water is hard and hard on appliances. :-)

Quiltinvaca 09-01-2011 05:08 PM

I use steam and sometimes spray sizing (never starch). I do use an expensive Rowenta because it is the heaviest iron I've ever used and I like the stainless steel bottom. I like it heavy so that I don't have to push down hard. My daughter (who is not a quilter) couldn't understand why I would pay so much for an iron --- until she tried it and then she bought one for herself as she said it's the only iron she's ever seen that levitates when you press "steam".

The most important thing is to never, ever "iron".
Always "press" and you'll never have distortion or stretching.

Nanaquilts44 09-01-2011 05:32 PM

I love all the answers and tips.

Jingle 09-01-2011 06:07 PM

I use a hot dry iron and if a seam gets pressed wrong, I spray with water. Works for me. I always press, iron the backings if they are very wrinkled.

vivoaks 09-02-2011 04:02 AM

I've found that if I use steam, the fabric seems to stretch much easier, so when I'm piecing, I only use a dry iron. Just me...

Shelbit30 09-02-2011 04:02 AM

Dry iron+starch :-)

Eloise 09-02-2011 04:07 AM

STEAM STEAM STEAM STEAM. It sure is a wonderful part of my quilting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needlegrammy 09-02-2011 04:10 AM

I use a very hot iron, Best Press and steam

CAJAMK 09-02-2011 04:13 AM

I use a dry hot iron. And yes, I press not iron. If there is a stubborn wrinkle then I have both a water bottle and starch handy. Ususally the water will take care of it. I do find that I like to starch a lighter cheap cotton which allows for more accuate cutting and helps with machine quilting. Just my 2 cents
