I use a dry hot iron to iron my fabric. I noticed some people here use steam which is understandable. But I also use Best Press spray while ironing and it really gets out wrinkles the best for me. (You can get it without fragrance). What do you use for ironing your fabric - steam or not?

I use an old $2.99 (thrift store) Sunbeam dry iron.
|
i NEVER put water into my irons- i keep a water bottle on the end of my ironing board- if my fabric needs a little spritz- and i don't want to use starch or sizing- i just pick up the spray bottle and give it a spritz----no hot drips- no leaking iron- has worked well for me for 45 years.

I use dry unless I have lots of wrinkles, then I spray a little water or spray starch.

I normally use a dry iron, but if I need a little extra something, I put water in it.
|

|

|
odd man out here; I use spray starch and steam
|
Dry iron; best press.
|
steamer here
BUT I make sure and PRESS not iron, esp. when pressing 45 degree seams! |
I also use steam and starch.
|
I use a very hot iron, and always have a spray bottle with plain water next to me.

dry iron and Magic Sizing

I use a steam iron when needed. Then when the water runs out, I use a dry iron. If I need a shot of steam after the water runs out, I use a shot of spray starch!

Steam and starch.

I have a dry iron I bought years ago from a place called Vermont Country Store.
|
Very hot iron with steam; sometimes spray as well.
To me, it's not the steam that distorts, but the presser. Jan in VA |
I'm a steamer too.

I use steam and Best Press. I love Best Press, but it makes me cough. I have tried several "flavors" and they all make me cough. I tape a kleenex over my nose and mouth, it helps. I hate to stop using it, but I think I should.

I usually fingerpress first then PRESS (not iron) the seam.

steamer

I use a dry iron.

Usually steam. Have even spritzed with water if steam still not enough, or I'll use steam and starch.

I use steam and sometimes spray sizing (never starch). I do use an expensive Rowenta because it is the heaviest iron I've ever used and I like the stainless steel bottom. I like it heavy so that I don't have to push down hard. My daughter (who is not a quilter) couldn't understand why I would pay so much for an iron --- until she tried it and then she bought one for herself as she said it's the only iron she's ever seen that levitates when you press "steam".
The most important thing is to never, ever "iron". Always "press" and you'll never have distortion or stretching. |
I love all the answers and tips.

I use a hot dry iron and if a seam gets pressed wrong, I spray with water. Works for me. I always press, iron the backings if they are very wrinkled.
|
I've found that if I use steam, the fabric seems to stretch much easier, so when I'm piecing, I only use a dry iron. Just me...
|
Dry iron+starch :-)
|
STEAM STEAM STEAM STEAM. It sure is a wonderful part of my quilting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
I use a very hot iron, Best Press and steam
|
I use a dry hot iron. And yes, I press not iron. If there is a stubborn wrinkle then I have both a water bottle and starch handy. Ususally the water will take care of it. I do find that I like to starch a lighter cheap cotton which allows for more accuate cutting and helps with machine quilting. Just my 2 cents
