Do You EPP? let's talk

I'm on my second epp quilt. the first was 3/4" hexes done in gfg. it's about 50 x 60 and my kitty owns it now.
I'm on my second it will be hopefully someday a queen. it's still 3/4" hexes one on top of two, all different fabrics. what are you working on and show us all a picture.

earthwalker 06-07-2014 06:46 PM

I am working on a queen gfg, and it is taking years. I only work on it in the evenings and have weeks where I don't pick it up....will post some pics - it may get me going again.

lynnie 06-07-2014 07:32 PM

I figured it out, i need 1,000 hrs of work to finish mine to be a queen. it's now about 25" x 25'. wish me luck. I'll try to have a friend post pics on tuesday.

Earthwalker, what size are you making your hexes?

I am doing one in 3/4 inch hexies also. Mine is the diamond layout. I have more done than shown but haven't taken a picture of all of them yet.

I'm working on Stars in the Garden by Yellow Creek Quilts. 1/2" hexi's and I have 4 done. I'm working on the 5th one. Again a slow process for me as well, but I keep at it and find I'm getting a little faster. I did a small quilt 1 inch hexi's and I really want to hand quilt it, but I need a bit more practice first. Also, I really want to start Lucy Boston though and I picked up from a shop today a kit for Mrs. Hartigan's Stash by Sue Daley. Oh...I say I'm totally addicted.

I am working on a hexie quilt as well. I am making a GFG out of 1 inch hexies using 30's reproduction fabrics. The plan is to make a queen size but we shall see how many years it takes. I was going full steam ahead and was working on it almost everyday, however I have just made a lap quilt on my machine for a gift but will get back to the hexies as soon as I get the binding sewn on the lap quilt. I think I have made about 28 hexie flowers. Will try and post a picture but might be tomorrow before I get it done. Have never posted a picture before but there always has to be a first time!

I'm working on my first ever EPP project at the moment. I'm making flowers using leftover purple and white on white fabrics. I'm making it up as I go along. Originally I had planned to make a simple cushion but apparently I am unable to make anything small and I think it's going to end up being a quilt...not sure what size it will end up. I just know that I'm really enjoying it!
It took me a while to work out how it actually works as I just couldn't get my head around it, but it's so easy! I'm so glad I finally worked it out!
I will try to post some photos of my progress later, I can't seem to post photos using my phone!
Looking forward to seeing everyone else's work :-)

I am currently quilting a queen size which was supposed to be finished last March as a wedding gift for a grandson, but life got in the way, so hopefully it will be finished before their first anniversary! It is one inch hexies, in the diamond layout. I admire those of you who do smaller hexies. I have done a few that I have used to applique on borders, but don't think I'd go smaller than one inch for a full size quilt. You are all more brave than I am!! I want to start another EPP using diamonds to make stars. Would like to fussy cut for that one. Will see.

ManiacQuilter2 06-08-2014 06:23 AM

Wow, I started to try to do 3/4" hex and they were just too small for these old hands. I am working on making four Minnie Mouse pillow squares into a lap quilt for my best friend's niece. Trying to decide how best to trim the squares accurately so they will fit in the quilt layout of 2" finished squares !!

Sewnoma 06-08-2014 06:33 AM

I've never done EPP but just saw a demo of it at my guild and of course now that I've seen it I want to try it. I don't generally get drawn to hand sewing but sewing hexes by machine just looks like a big, non-fun hassle. And I think it'd be nice to have something portable. Seems like a good way to use up scraps, too!

charsuewilson 06-08-2014 07:58 AM

I'm doing a 1/2" hexie GFG for a friend's doll house. So the quilt won't be too big. I'm having trouble getting the freezer paper hexies to stick. But the whole project fits easily into a quart freezer bag.

I have taken two different classes on EPP and just love it! I am presently making 1" hexi flowers like GFG, but I'm not sure what the next step is after making the flowers. Granted, I only have about 12 made so far, but I wonder if I should make them all at once (how many?) or join as I go along, spreading out the colors. Do you always have a plan or work from a pattern ? Just love the hand work and the joy of making those darling little things! What do you do?

sewbelle52 06-08-2014 11:09 AM

Not sure how I got hooked but am thinking it was from pinterest. Sooo I started making a 2" 60degree diamond star quilt. The stars are mostly sweet calicoes or calico-like fabrics with white-on-white diamonds all around each star. I'm needing 240ish for a queen size bed and I now have 50ish sewn together. I don't get to sew on it as much as I'd like---have severe allergies to nickel. At times, my fingers look like ground hamburger literally. Anyone knows what needle I can use? Also, am wondering how to finish edge of my quilt--suggestions? To me, It is so peaceful to sit and EPP at night when things are stressful! I LOVE IT!! Also am thinking of starting GFG using Fig Tree Quilts fabric in plum, green, and apricot.

I had that problem too---join as I go along or make all of them. In the end, ADD took over and I sew them together for a while, then stop and sew some together---over and over it's a cycle!

I try to work a row a day, but as you all know, as it gets bigger, so do the rows. today i made about 30 units. My units are 3 pcs. of 3/4" hexes, one on top of two this time round. now just to add the row on. that can take upwards of 2 hrs. alot of work. i'm keeping this one. My first as 3/4" gfg and my cat has it. That seemed to have taken forever. my pc is now about 36 x 36. getting there slowly. really s-l-o-w-l-y. It's relaxing and a good use of 'down time'.

lynnie 06-08-2014 06:27 PM

Dakotamaid, love your layout!

dakotamaid 06-08-2014 06:44 PM

Thank you Lynnie! We need pics of other projects as well. I love hexies :)

NJ Quilter 06-08-2014 07:00 PM

I did a tumbling block quilt about 12 yrs ago using epp. I loved it. Baby qiult for niece at the time. I hand quilt so get my handwork fix that way normally but thoroughly enjoy epp projects.

lynnie 06-09-2014 05:09 PM

I did this one for a doll quilt exchange. Really want to do the Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses but my to do list for this year is full and I am way behind!

JAGSD 06-10-2014 04:17 AM

I started my Hexie quilt when my twins were in baseball, (6 yrs. old)would sit and work on it whenever was " waiting" for anything and etc. , I have laid it down off and on Over the years. My twins are now 17 and one has asked for it to be his..... I am still planning on it being a queen size but have much more to do. I will post a picture as soon as I get a few extra minutes to resize....or quilt show starts this week so have tons going on. Anyways my Hexie quilt is totally scrappy with no main design.

We are about at the same place, I have about 12 made also. I plan on joining them together in front of the tv. (As soon as I find a green I like, I'm going traditional.) Then I'll take my little bag of sewing when I go out and about. It's amazing how many can get done waiting in Dr's offices. But then I'm going scrappy so color placement doesn't really matter.

Sisty88 06-10-2014 06:51 AM

I have a quick question for other EPPers! At what point do you press your hexies? Before you take the papers out? Straight after you take out the papers? Or once it's all joined together?

toverly 06-10-2014 02:25 PM

I press before I take the papers out.

lynnie 06-10-2014 02:31 PM

Cherylsea your quilt is beautiful

look under PICTURES my quilt is there, my friend posted it for me. about 100 hrs of work there. need about 1,000 more to finish it. need more scraps too.

lynnie 06-10-2014 02:33 PM

I press withthe papers in and i also pc it all together withthe papers in.
after the seams have been senw, i take the papers out

QltrSue 06-10-2014 05:18 PM

Ooooh, Cherylsea, your quilt IS beautiful. Love how you did the leaves. And the quilting! Wonder what size the hexis are?

QltrSue 06-10-2014 05:21 PM

Oksewglad: Your quilt is darling! Love all the scrappiness and how it's quilted.

I started sewing these a little over a year ago. I love the portability of the project. These are 3/4". I also have a flimsy of this size with GMFG blocks as a doll quilt for my GD.

beautiful quilt. love your set. love the scrappiness of it.

QltrSue 06-14-2014 08:59 AM

Since I've been working on my hexis lately, I've had some eye strain probably brought on by the close work. It made me wonder if other EPPers use magnifying glasses or other type of apparatus to help with that. Do you use reading glasses, magnifiers or ......?

dakotamaid 06-14-2014 09:18 AM

QltrSue, I don't use either reading glasses or magnifying lens but there are days I should probably do so. I only work on my hexies a couple of hours a day.
