sometimes I design my own, and others I will take a pattern and modify it. Always choose fabrics of my liking though

i dont use patterns they confuse me so normally i set down with paper and pencil and draw out the size i need and how many rows

I may have followed a pattern to the letter once... Maybe.

I followed a pattern once(my avatar quilt), now I wing it. A good example I am making an americana quilt using drunkard's path in large X pattern with hand quilting in large blocks of eagles and presidents and even stars. No pattern here with this one. Glenn

uh yes, that is how I did my first quilt. My first KING size quilt. With sashing. I pulled it off but man I wish I had chosen something that I could have just followed directions on. Good luck!

yep

Just about every time. It often is governed by the sizes of the scraps that are sitting in front of me- i.e. "What can I make from these triangles cut off the last flying geese blocks?"

Absolutely! That's the only way to go.
