I have two pieces of fabric that I realy can't see cutting up and think They can be made in to large blocks to show off the fabric. Do you ever run into this??

Have you ever completed a quilt around one central block and just added borders?

tlrnhi 01-29-2009 05:18 PM

I have a lot of fabric that I don't want to cut! I think it's just too pretty!

triciasquilts 01-29-2009 05:26 PM

Always alot and then I think what am I thinking? Thats what I bought it for is to make a quilt!!!

Shemjo 01-29-2009 05:39 PM

Yes, some fabrics want to stay together! 9 patch pizazz shows how to use some of those wonderful fabrics in larger pieces with other coordinating fabrics. Sometimes I want to use them as back of throws so I can reverse and see the fun stuff!

I have a few pieces of fabric like that. Just can't bring myself to cut it. Just take it out and look at it once in a while.

redrummy 01-29-2009 07:36 PM

I bought an angel fabric that just begged me not to cut it. I used it as center and put cut squares 3 rows around it. they set it off so well it looked like I planned it. my daughter in law loved it. So if it is speaking to you, listen to it, and work with it. you will be glad you did.

On my trip to visit my brother in Indiana, I bought a two yard piece of this beautiful fabric, with very large peacock's on it. I want to make a quilt out of it, but I just can't bear to cut into it. So, I too understand how you feel.

"Thimbleberries Tree Farm Throw" and "Thimbleberries Street Scene" are two great patterns that use a large cut of fabric for the center of the quilt and then surround with interesting boarders. I think these are both ideal for showcasing those fabulous prints that I don't want to cut. Nita

Another suggestion: :
"Just Can't Cut It All Washed Up" You can find the pattern on the Fat Quarter Shop link. I don't have that one, but might need to buy one for myself. Nita

I bought a length of fabric that has betty boop on it,to make a quilt for my mom,but I couldn't cut it it would lose the pattern and not make much sense so I left it whole, put a few different width of borders around it and made a "whole cloth "quilt out of it

live2teach 01-30-2009 03:17 PM

Oh yes, that has happened before. Sometimes I would wait a couple of weeks before I cut it...I kept fondling it..lol.

mochasue 01-30-2009 03:41 PM

Yes, my bunny fabric. I just can't stand to cut up my little bunnies and see half faces and bottoms.

ButtercreamCakeArtist 01-30-2009 04:28 PM

Yes! I'm very good at procrastinating. It seems like the pieces I don't want to cut, that I DO actually cut, I MESS Up on the measurements or something!

mrs. fitz 01-31-2009 09:28 AM

Yes, lots of my fabrics just get taken out and admired because if I cut them......I won't have them any more. Makes sense to me. Just this week I finished my first-ever batik quilt using fabrics I've had for several years. It was time. BTW, I did exactly the same thing with Betty Boop (cowgirl) fabric that "azdesertrat" did. Added some borders, quilted around each Betty motif, and she became an instant whole cloth quilt.

Skeat 01-31-2009 10:36 AM

I run into this all the time!:))I sometimes use the fabrics for decorating, espec around holidays. If it is a whole line I can't live w/o...I then will find a big block quilt. One that really shows off the fabric in larger squares or rectangles. We all love our fabrics! Skeat

zennia 01-31-2009 11:44 AM

I sure do. Thats why I call myself a fabric collector rather then a quilter. I have several L. Burch fabrics i just cant cut apart. I love just looking at them.

I'm always more than ready for a fabric massacre. Jack the (seam) Ripper would be proud.

I have a hydrangea fabric by Lakehouse. Took me a while to find it; but oh so gorgeous. Not sure if I can make the first cut. :?

I know what you mean...

Maybe... Make large alternating squares to go with some equally beautiful patchwork. Or fold it up, put it on a shelf and fondle it once in a while because it makes you happy. Maybe you need the right inspiration.

I don't really know what to do... I have this problem every time. Sometimes I have the wrestle with myself to make the first cut, or build up excitement over the completed project.

Here is a quilt that I made with Laurel Burch fabric that just could not be cut into small pieces. It would have just ruined the pattern of the fabric. I cut it into large rectangles, made sashing for it and quilted. I really liked the effect.

Yes I have ... and it turned out great ! Some prints are just too beautiful to cut up !

Cuilteanna 01-25-2011 08:16 AM

That's what I call my "permanent stash". They won't be cut until I either find the perfect project for them or run out of other fabric.

nnewman 01-25-2011 08:54 AM

Have you seen the pattern "Sidelights" by Mountainpeek Creations? It features a panel or theme fabric on the left side and features blocks, and borders around the right and bottom. I have really enjoyed using this simple pattern to showcase beautiful material I don't wish to cut up. I have also used the unsymetrical pattern design as a starting point for other kinds of side blocks. Its an easy pattern.

I have a bunch of fabric that I brought home from my time in the Peace Corps. I want to make a quilt eventually, but I am afraid I will mess it up. This fabric can not be replaced, unless I jump on a plane to africa! I will wait untill I know what I'm doing before touching that fabric.

quilter1943 01-25-2011 11:51 AM

Yes, and I ended up doing a hand quilted whole cloth wall hanging. It's in the hall by my sewing room. Just love it.

Central Ohio: From NorthEastern Ohio: I have that same fabric for a wedding quilt for my niece. I'm going to use the Warm Wishes pattern.

But I have another dilemma. I have the New Dawn panel with the astrological signs in a huge circle around the sun. I'm trying to figure out how to turn the sun so the panel will be up and down, not across. I hate when this stuff happens!

Lori S 01-25-2011 12:13 PM

Oh yes this does happen, and when it does the fabric goes into what I call the fabric "muesum" . It does not come out and get cut till something even more spectacular takes its place.
My family ( all quilters) love to come and look at the stuff in the "muesum". Maybe I should have them wear gloves when they pull out a piece.

Central Ohio Quilter 01-26-2011 07:20 AM

"The Fabric Museum"!

I love that term!

MamaHen 01-26-2011 07:39 AM

"ALWAYS" I think my whole fabric stash is too pretty to cut. But sometimes I do!!!!!

Becky Crafts 01-26-2011 07:40 AM

I was given a gorgeous piece of satiny, green, Christmas fabric with round ornaments all over it as though embossed. It's so pretty I can't bring myself to cut it & normally I don't even like greens. I'm very picky what shade of green I use. This really baffles me, but eventually I'll use it in a table runner.
