Do you ever split a fat batting?

1 Attachment(s)
Recently I bought a roll of poly batting for charity quilting. It was supposed to be thin but it's not. It's about 1" all puffed up. I made this charity quilt with it and I HATE how fat it is! Just wondering if anyone has any tips on splitting fat batting... Can I do this without the batting splitting unevenly? What's your experience with this?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

The FAT quilt:

Well, I love the quilt. If this is the charity quilt, the person getting it will too. I just love it. Don't change it at all.

dorismae904 09-15-2015 03:38 PM

I agree. It's so colorful and no one will mind if it's puffy. That being said, I did once split a thick batting with no problems.

Monika 09-15-2015 03:40 PM

Great colors! I wouldn't change a thing, I think it looks great.

Hi Sewbizgirl,

I split a wool batting once. Things went pretty well, but I did hit one spot where it wasn't as "even" as I wanted it to be. I think it would be even more difficult to evenly split a poly batting. Love your colorful quilt.

I was given a roll of "fat" batting. I split it and it worked great.

I agree with all of the above. I can't help but wonder, tho, if the batting was folded when you used it. I made this mistake (at least) once. It can be difficult to tell! (Sometimes I feel like I'm peeling apart something I shouldn't.)

Some people - including my husband - hugely prefer a lofty quilt! (In fact, he's rejected my homemade quilts using flat batting in favor of a store-bought quilt for exactly this reason.)

Annaquilts 09-15-2015 04:22 PM

I had the same problem with Hobbs Poly batting. It was sold to me as the batting people use all the time for donation quilts. I even told the people selling it that it was for preemie quilts. I have been splitting it but preemie quilts are very small. I think it would be very hard to split for a larger quilt. For very small baby quilts it is hard to use that thick a batting as the quilt becomes stiff. I just ordered Soft N Crafty toasty cotton batting to use for the smaller preemie quilts. It is on sale right now, 50% off and go to coupons and choose Sept60 for free shipping, and it is light weight and has a good drape unlike Warm and Natural or Hobby Poly bat.

Yes! What she is saying above. I think this larger quilt will be well received and loved as many people prefer poly batting. By the way you quilt is stunning!!!!

sewbizgirl 09-15-2015 06:32 PM

Thanks for the compliments on the quilt. It was just a few evenings playing with my scraps.... and I am not going to change anything on that quilt, but I never want to make another one that fat again, ever.

I tried splitting the batting and I'm now quilting another charity lap quilt, and even tho the batting is now thinner, that polyester shifts all around! I just hate the stuff! Maybe I can chalk it up to experience and donate it to my charity group. I bought a whole roll! Ugh.

I'm just spoiled by the wonderful Hobbs 80/20 I normally use. It's my favorite of all.

I understand what you are saying, but no... I had already unfolded the batting.

notmorecraft 09-15-2015 10:53 PM

Like you, I made this mistake, I hated the poly, my Juki wasn't overly keen on it either. The roll has been consigned to Attic, will be used for something(not sure what) back to 80/20 for me.

What a beautiful quilt.

Onebyone 09-16-2015 05:30 AM

A guild member buys and splits her high loft batting because she's cheap. She gets two battings for the price of one. It's not worth the time or effort and rarely does it split evenly. Her quilts are floppy looking with the thin uneven batting.

DonnaPBradshaw 09-16-2015 09:49 AM

never had to split any batting! seems like it would be way too hard. I would just use this batting for thicker quilts and call it good!

ManiacQuilter2 09-16-2015 09:56 AM

I don't know how you would split the batting. Usually that batting is used with tied quilt. Someone will enjoy the comforts of this quilt.

quiltmouse 09-16-2015 10:23 AM

I love your colorful scrappy quilt, puffy & all.

Tiggersmom 09-16-2015 01:43 PM

Try warm and white. It's polyester but thin and works well in quilts.

Use a coupon. I believe Joanns carries it.

Debbie Ness 09-16-2015 02:14 PM

I made a tied quilt for my son using the FAT poly batting. It's now the same thickness as the 'thin' batting. All the puffyness was washed out!

lynnie 09-16-2015 04:40 PM

I worked at a casket company and the batting was thick, so I always split it. great free batt for me. I quilt as I go. and we had it in 24" widths, perfect for me.

Belfrybat 09-17-2015 03:56 AM

I've split lap-sized pieces of batting before. The side with the scrim peels off fairly easily but the other side tends to end up lumpy looking. But I don't notice it when it's actually in a quilt.

No complaints about not being puffy. LOL

bearisgray 09-17-2015 04:41 AM

Love the quilt. The colors just glow!

annette1952 09-17-2015 05:54 AM

I think your quilt is great. Love all the colors bright & cheery. Anyone would love to have it. If you do a lot of charity quilts you could use it up. Puffy quilts are well received. Lots of people like them.

fivepaws 09-17-2015 06:39 AM

I like the lofty (puffy) quilt look myself. Especially in baby quilts. I think yours looks great.

Yooper32 09-17-2015 06:53 AM

Children love the high loft quilts, they love the fluffy look. That said, I have made my last one. What a struggle to FMQ on a high loft, so, no more for me.

tessagin 09-17-2015 06:58 AM

Gorgeous quilt and I'm sure the recipient will be very grateful. I've split batting but it wasn't a very large piece.

justflyingin 09-17-2015 07:09 AM

I use poly all the time. Cotton is beautiful to work with and seems to make quilting easy. I wish it were an option here....but your quilt is fine. You can continue to use it every once in a while for charity quilts since you already invested in it. The recipient will love it.

But it is hard to quilt a thicker batting. Much, much harder. A wider, more open design works much better.

shasta5718 09-17-2015 07:12 AM

I like a fat fluffy quilt in the winter they seem warmer.

Warm and White is 87.5% cotton and 12.5% polymer fibers.
per Joann's description.

rosiewell 09-17-2015 08:43 AM

I think the quilt is beautiful the way it is. I try to split a heavy batting once with mixed results, so I put it aside to use as pillow filling, works great.

SuziSew 09-17-2015 09:31 AM

When "non quilters" think of a quilt they think of something fluffy...or fat. Its a fabulous quilt and I think it's perfect the way it is, and whoever receives it will love it too!

Yes, I think only the scrim in it is poly. It's mostly a cotton batting.

I appreciate everyone's advice. I guess I will keep the batting for charity quilts. I can see it being used for tied quilts only, tho I don't really like them. It won't go to waste. I really do hate it tho!

Thanks for your positive comments on my scrappy quilt top.

Many years ago when I didn't know what to buy, and ended up with fat batting, I would split it in half, and would usually pull apart quilt well.

I was actually looking for a mid to high loft batting a few weeks ago and could not find one. The Hobbs Polly one that was refered to is that the Polly Down(I think that is the name of it) what is the name of the one you are using in your very cute quilt.

sewbizgirl 09-17-2015 05:50 PM

I really don't know, rupe... I buy it from a wholesaler and it's a huge unmarked roll. It's about an inch thick. If you are near Mississippi, come get it! I'm make you a real good deal! :)

zozee 09-17-2015 05:54 PM

I like the quilt and I think the fluffiness will be very much appreciated by the recipient. And hey, you learned a lesson , right?--that you hate to work that particular batting. Too bad you bought a whole roll, but surely someone will want it. Sometimes cutting your losses and moving on is the best solution.

sewbizgirl 09-17-2015 05:56 PM

You couldn't be more right, Zozee!
