quilt blocks get their names?

I am making a Sylvia's Bridal Sampler quilt and I can't figure out for the life of me why a lot of the blocks have the names they do. The finished designs have no connection with the name--at least as far as I can figure out. :D

very often, common blocks were given regional or special event names or named for person or place If you read Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Blocks you can see the various names given the blocks.

OneMoreQuilt, It'll be awhile. This is being done as BOM by my LQS. We've received all the blocks now & have until Nov. 11 to finish it. A pieced top will give us a chance in a drawing for a gift certificate at the shop. A completed quilt (quilted & bound) will get a chance for a larger gift certificate. I'm just aiming to have the top pieced pieced by then. I still have 15 more blocks to finish.
