I'm in a real quandry. I have plenty of these "jelly rolls" which are to be 2 1/2 inches wide.. THEY are NOT. I was trying to use MSCQ tute on checkered dresden plate, but I need these strips of 4 that are sewn together to be 8 1/2. I"m not coming up with 7 1/2 inches. This is going to greatly effect my blades. This one was Opasl from Northcott. Does everyone else have this trouble?

I have a big clothes hamper next to my cutting table for all my scraps. When it gets full I sack it up and give it away. I use out of it when I want to but I don't keep it once it's full. I always have more, it's never ending. I have too many fat quarters to ever run out of scraps.

Like most, I do not precut my scraps until I know where they're going but I have them sorted in 3 bins...crumbs, strips and "larger" scraps (like leftover border pieces). FQs and yardage is kept separate.

It's so hard to use those pretty scraps....I started to cut some scraps up into sizes...there were so many I would have been there for years....plus...I actually hurt my shoulder I think from doing this for periods of time...I am still trying but I do 10-15 minutes at a time...
i actually made about 48 string quilt blocks in 2016...blues....but it looked like there were more scraps when I finished my blocks...I thinks scraps "procreate"... |

I organize scraps by color and do not cut them on my die cutter till I get ready to make a particular quilt. This way I do not spend time on cutting and wear and tear on my die cutter and mats, until I am sure I will use those particular sized pieces.

I just had to trim down a 5" charm pack - was almost 1/4" overcut. I save scraps & have quilters give them to me along w/salvedges. I love scrappy & make string quilts on muslin foundations so I don't have to add batting. These are then backed, bound & donated. I call them "sleeping porch quilts" or "car quilts." Just enough when you don't need too much warmth. Have fun.

I also do not cut up my scraps since I just don't know what size I'll ultimately need to use. I do store my scraps according to general size; crumbs, squares, strips, and larger. |
I would never have been able to make my samplers like the Splendid one I'm doing now if I cut all my scraps! It just seems so limiting to only have one size.
