They claim one has never been sent back, and most customers wind up buying a second chair. So with my back problems that's why I'm checking them out. I was told that the closest dealer to me was 75 miles away at a custom sewing cabinet shop.
jThat's all I know. |
I have two office chair from Staples, can't remember the cost but not that much.
They works great. |
I would want to do a test drive in person to see if the chair really would help your back. I have found comfortable office chairs by NOT looking in the cheap section. Good Luck !!

I bought mine at Staples for about $100. Sat in all til I found one comfortable for me.

I had sciatica for most of my life until a couple years ago when I had hip replacement surgery.
I have a really old Herman Miller I think is the brand. I paid $500 for it in 1994. I was measured for it. It was sold by a local office furniture store. Not Staples or any of those but a store that designs interior spaces like office cabinetry, etc. It is literally designed to fit my behind--well actually my lumbar curve. Best 500 I have ever spent. I don't think they do that any more though. 19 years later and I still use that chair. Can't say that about the cheaper ones. |
I looked it up and it is Herman Miller. Look under performance chairs on their website. I have a Herman Miller Equa 2. I remember they measured my leg lengths, arms etc and then picked the options to make my chair. OMG, choke, I just saw the list price on that chair now and it is 1200.

I have an office chair with a $10.00 back support which works just fine. I actually find that as long as I use a chair with wheels for computer and sewing that I don't have too much of an issue.

I have had a Balan's Chair for decades, the kind without a back support. It came highly recommended by my orthopedic MD because I have scoliosis in the small of my back and had to be able to sit upright while sewing. I absolutely love it because it's so comfortable for me, keeps my back straight, and keeps me from "hunching over" my sewing machine. It's been a Godsend! Here's a link so you can see what I'm talking about. Mine has just the seat rest and knee rest, no back and no rolling casters.

MacThayer, I am so interested in this and the whole thread. But I have a question, hope it's not too dumb. How do you use your foot control for sewing? I am just starting to look into a different chair because the one I have pushes my upper back forward and I have trouble with pain in my back anyway. Thanks in advance.

I have the Herman Miller with fully adjustable arms, height & lumbar. They too have 3 sizes S M L. Cost is a little high, upwards of $769. A good office supply store should sell them. Forgot to add, love the breathable seat &back too. Hope the link works! It looks weird! Just Google Herman Miller.
Good luck! |
It looks like a recovered office chair. Go to Staples.

Like Tartan and carolaug I bought my chair at Staples when they were on sale. I've had mine for 5 years now and no complaints so far.
|
Conniemaried, i too am tall with long legs (5'10") and I have a very bad back (6 surgeries) and I have yet to find a chair that is comfortable for an extended amount of time so I just work with what I have & take many breaks. Let me know if you ever find a chair that has excellent lower lumbar and bra strap support area. PLEASE

I bought an executive office chair at a thrift store for $20 about 8 years ago. We were in Florida and brought it back to Alabama. It has been my quilting chair ever since. My DH bought me a massager for the back of the chair and it works just fine but not for long periods of time.

I have lumbar issues and I'm short. Couldn 't find a chair that was comfortable, adjustable and moved about smoothly and quickly on hardwood floors. Have an L shaped work center. Had tried many different chairs including straight backed ones. We were in Walmart and my son spotted a mn adjustable, smooth rolling chair made exactly like the one in the picture you sent for something like $29.95. He said he'd buy it for me and I kept telling him it was cheap and a waste of $30.00 but he insisted. I LOVE IT! The member who said she leaned forward when she sewed is correct and I think we all do subconsciously...(could it be vision deficits that make us do that?)

I also do not use the foot pedal but the on/off button on my Janome. I have a foot rest under my table.
|
Yes you will get disc creep with extended sitting. If you don't have stenosis, then the most important thing is to keep the lumbar curve in place by supporting it. OTOH, if it is true sciatica and not caused by the disc, the issue is the compression at the piriformis (butt) muscle. In which case, foot positioning is very important. If you have stenosis--moderate to severe, nothing will really help except maybe leaning ever so slightly forward.

They are not able to give u price cuz it depends on what grade of fabric u picked out for the chair. Some fabrics costs more than other. Once upon selection of fabrics then they can quote you.
|
I use a Staples high back adjustable office chair too but added a portable mesh back support I got at a quilt show for under $20 (may be more now). It's an additional adjustable mesh lumbar support that fastens with elastic around the back of the chair. You could use in the car too. You might find them at Bed Bath and Beyond or even at Staples.

That chair is pretty but I'd need arms on it. I bought my leather office chair with arms at Staples on sale for under a hundred dollars. I love it. It can roll across my studio floor if I need to press fabric etc.
|
I, too, have back issues. I bought an office chair at Office Depot that is rated for 8-10 hours of comfort. It was on sale so I got a good price. I can use it with or without arms. It adjusts for all my needs, which vary daily. Good luck in your search. But please don't buy a chair without trying it first. Sit for more than a few minutes in it. <><
|
I would suggest you go to an Office Max or Depot and try all their chairs, even if you have to take a book and sit in them for 20-30 minutes. They have different sizes and lumbar support and for under $200 or way less you could get a good chair. These people make me think of the the organization 10-15 years ago that sold light bulbs that were supposed to last 10 years for $15.00 each when reg. one was .25- .50 cents. I find chairs with arms are easier on my back as I can rest my arms when doing some things and that takes strain off my back and neck.

Ask an expert. I have a very bad back, and several years ago I was moving and needed to buy a new mattress. There are so many mattress commercials on tv and I asked my chiropractor if any of them was better than others. And he said no. Might as well go with a regular mattress. I would check with your doctor or chiropractor or someone who knows about things like this before making a decision. $500 to $600 sounds outrageous for a chair. For that amount of money it would have to give me periodic massages.

I bought one of these at the Houston Quilt Festival about 5 years ago and LOVE IT!!!! If my house caught on fire I would definitely try to save it, with my machines on it of course! Seriously, I can adjust it so many ways that it is always comfortable to me and supports my back.
I was fortunate in that I was able to purchase the show model at the Houston show and so I got a really good deal on it and I live in Houston so bringing it home was no problem. |
