Hi, do you know how the edge of this pattern is made? The part that looks like a ribbon.
Thank you,

JJC 09-15-2012 09:17 AM

By looking at it, I would say triangles and squares or all triangles. Love the ribbon effect it gives.

Check Quilters Cache. I'm sure Marcia has a pattern for this under border patterns.

I thought so too, but I don't know if there is a regtangle in there some where. Would you think 4 patches with only 3 colors? (Maybe I'll try that to see if it's all in the arrangement) I tried to enlarge the picture to see, but it becomes so blurred.
Thank you,

THank you all. QuiltnNan I think that's it.
I have a pretty piece of material with Irises, too pretty to cut small. I want to make a table runner & make the twisted ribbon border. I will post a picture when I am done :)
Thank you again, you all are awesom.

This is close to the table runner. I would not do the half square triangles in the area where the green is. I would do a full square. Then assemble it on the diagonal. I love the look of this for a border. Have Fun! Luann in CT

Great border!

I got my instructions from "The Border Workbook". Love this book. It tells you how to make a pieced border to fit YOUR quilt, and includes corner treatments.

The older edition (less color) is available used from Amazon for a few bucks:

It's called a Ribbon border. That may help you when doing a search for different versions of it.

CoyoteQuilts 09-15-2012 08:37 PM

Eleanor Burns does this and it is easy. The way she makes it is with 1/2 triangle and 1/4 triangle squares. It is the placement of the colors that make the ribbon...

Ellageo 09-17-2012 04:46 AM

I believe the 'ribbon' binding is a piece of striped fabric cut on the bias & used for the binding! ??? That's what I woud do anyway.

Love this border!! Thanks fellow quilters for showing us some sources to be able to do it. Gotta put this on my to-do list..love it!

That is a great border.

go to quilt blocks galore then to quilterscashe and on the lower right side of the home page there is a border section. that is called the ribbon.

Carol Ann 09-17-2012 05:26 AM

The Border Workbook I have, this pattern is called "according pleats". The book is the 10th Anniversary Edition, the author is Janet Kime.

Hi, do you know how the edge of this pattern is made? The part that looks like a ribbon.
Thank you,

If you look at each segment, it is like Seminole piecing. Each is cut at a 45 degree angle and pieced. Ex: small dot strip, green, small dot print: pieced in 1" to 2" strips. Cut on angle at 45 degrees, and you will have that unit. Next unit is red 1" or 2" strip (use 1 size to match FINISHED SIZE of other 3 pieces: white dot-green-white dot), cut at angle and piece all to make strip ribbon. If you want to go around corner etc, sketch it on graph paper first, usingeach sq to = 1/2". It is really much easier than it looks. It is very easy to customize. This looks like 1" (finished) strips of the print-green-print= 3" finished and cut at that angle of 2" to finish at 1.5" This is purely a guess. Just sketch out the design using my description.

Any book on Seminole piecing or borders should have the pattern. This pattern is really easy to customize and has been in books for 10-15 years. The key is to tilt your head to the left while looking at your photo and you will see the blocks. After units are trimmed and pieced, straight borders are pieced in top and bottom. Good luck

It looks like the ribbon is made up of rectangles cut on the slant and the green is a square, poka dot is half squares attached to the green square and the binding is stripes cut on the bias.

I don't have this exact pattern, but I do have something very similar. I'm just walking out the door to go quilting so will try and get it sent to you when I get home. Cheers.

My quiltPro called it folded ribbon. Glad you found your pattern.

T. 09-18-2012 06:37 AM

Thank you. That sounds even better. I'd like to try the strips first :)

T. 09-18-2012 06:38 AM

Will do. I can't wait, because the material, I got when I first saw this picture & wanted to do it, is really pretty.

lfstamper 09-18-2012 06:39 AM

Be sure to show us what you do!

katydidkg 09-20-2012 03:20 AM

The pattern is by : www.piecedtreepatterns.com it's called Twister ... not to be confused with the twister pattern done with the template. The border you are asking about - the block is a half square triangle and two quarter sq triangles. I've made this, turns out great !
