Do you have the pattern for these two blocks?

Hi. About seven years ago I was making a blue-and-white quilt. Now I'm making a Army quilt for a mom who lost her son in the Army. I looked at the blue-and-white quilt and couldn't find the pattern of two of the blocks I made. I thought I had gotten all of them from Quilters Cache, but no! I couldn't find them there. I would appreciate any help you could give me. The first one is a Kimono Star and the second is Soldiers Star.

Hi. Your link doesn't work. Sorry.

Here's a link to a Soldier's Star quilt.... likely bigger than what you made but perhaps you reduced the picture? https://www.etsy.com/listing/5988725...-quilt-pattern

I have never heard of a kimono star. Mr. Google also seems to be stumped. Unfortunately your photo did not upload. Could you try again please.

I tried times to get the pictures inserted, but it just seems to leave a link. Here we go--attempt number three! First one is Kimono Star and the second is Soldiers (with or without apostrophe!) Star

Well, they're really big but at least they're there.

Omigosh! Technical problems. The original program is five down from this post. The stars are two down, you can't miss them! Hopefully!

They are both beautiful! I can understand why the first one is called kimono star. Both look relatively easy to graph out but I am sure that someone here will do the heavy lifting using their EQ.

They should be fairly easy to draft, especially the Soldier's Star. What size do you want to make them?

Queenbarbiej 11-13-2018 05:30 AM

To me the kimono star looks as if its a half square triangle block with a dark blue sashing in the middle then cut in half add another dark blue sashing then half square flower print. Hopefully that makes sense.

What size block did you want? They are both 9 patch blocks, so if you wanted a 12.5" block (finishing at 12" in the quilt), you would need each section of the 9 patch to be 4.5" square. You could probably figure it out without a pattern on that basis, (I hope).

sewbizgirl 11-13-2018 07:46 AM

Just looked at your stars again... IF these are 12.5" blocks, all the triangles in the second block would be 2.5" finished. You need to make HSTs that are 2.5" finished. Likewise, the snowball corner triangles in the North, South, East and West blocks are also 2.5" finished. Center square is 4.5" the 4 white snowballed squares are 4.5", before the corners are applied.

The kimono star would have 4 corner blocks at 4.5" square. The center is cut 3" square, and cut two white pieces 3"x1.5", and two pieces 4.5"x1.5".

Each North, South, East and West blocks would be a 4.5" HST and a 4.5" Quarter Square triangle. The kimono stripe looks like 1.2" finished, so you would need to start with a 1" strip. Add stripe, and trim your pieces to the proper size with a ruler, so that the total square ends up 4.5".

Clear as mud? :D That's how I would do it, anyway. I have no EQ program.

That is true; the size I want is 12" finished. I'm pretty sure I could make the Soldier Star, but what stymies me with the Kimono Star is the dark strip on the points of the star.

For the kimono block -- Since you have a completed block you should be able to measure the width of the dark bands. Add half an inch for seam allowances and sew to a strip WOF (width of fabric) to the floral. I haven't figured out the yardage, but I think a 4-4.5" (or 5" and sew bands to both sides) will give you plenty to work with, with little waste.

Just got back from Japan and bought a lot of fabric. Is there a pattern for kimono star?

AnnT 11-14-2018 06:00 AM

Those are great looking blocks! I don't recall seeing them before.

The Kimono Star looks to be a variation of the Spinning Star aka Twin Star

Would love to see a picture of the original quilt. I like these two fun stars and would love to make a quilt with all different kinds of stars.
