Do you keep a hand stitching/quilting project near by?

I finished a Yo Yo quilt recently and I got so use to watching tv and hand stitching that I find I am looking for another project to work on while I sit and watch my grandson or watch tv.

I should get back out the counted cross stitch project I set aside while doing the Yo Yo quilt!

Do you have a hand stitching/quilting project that you are working on?

phranny 07-16-2012 12:02 PM

Yes! I have a stamped cross stitch quilt top I'm working on, picked up at a yard sale for $1.00. When we go on a road trip, I take it with me as well. I don't expect to finish it soon, it's a long term project, but I need something to keep my hands busy while watching TV.

Okay, I used to do needlepoint before I started quilting (over 45 completed framed needlepoint products ranging in size from 8 x 10 to 28 x 36 and every size in between). Now, I make sure I have a hand quilting project at hand in the car for long trips and by my chair in the evening while watching TV or listening to a book on cd. I just love retirement ;-)

I do a lot of hand embroidering when I'm watching something on TV with the family. This way I'm in the room with them instead of in my sewing closet. Not sure what I'll do with all of it, but I enjoy it.

nycquilter 07-16-2012 12:39 PM

I hand applique while watching TV in the evenings. Right now, I have two projects going. One is a large, Hawai'ian quilt, about 108x108. That lives on the chair by the TV (usually set to Yankee games!). The other is for traveling and fits on my lap.

tesspug 07-16-2012 12:42 PM

I usually crochet, unless I have a quilt that needs binding.

ckcowl 07-16-2012 12:48 PM

yes---i always have a hand stitching project or 3 going- my english paper piecing project is my (travel) hand piece these days- i also sit & work on bindings, wool applique blocks, needle turn applique blocks- or i wrap clothesline for making baskets/bowls- or i hook on my wool hooked rug- or my locker hooking projects....always working on something.

Yes--I have Cathedral Window blocks to take with me in the car. I have been working on them for 5-6 years so far. If I don't do hand work when I watch TV, I fall asleep. I don't work on the CW blocks at home though.

Yes, two
1. hand piecing Jo Morton's Snowball in Harvest with repro fabrics; I changed her dimensions to 4 1/2" square with 2" corners
2. English paper piecing Dresden Plate

In the past I did a Grandmother's Flowergarden - English pp - a crib quilt for my oldest grandson using fabrics from all his family- woven cotton clothes. He's 20 and I still haven't finished it. I will for his first born someday
and a Cathedral Windows, which I hated doing and gave away all I'd done before stopping.

Pat625 07-16-2012 01:29 PM

Right now my hand/tv/travel project is a Cathedral window. As soon as I finish that I will be working on a Hickory Nut quilt. I just ordered the templates from Hickory Hill Quilts, and they arrived today! I can't wait to begin working on this! i have been excited about this project since I saw the tutorial on here!

During the cooler months, I crochet afghans, while watching TV. During warm weather, I do counted cross stitch, thread crochet, or something else that doesn't have to sit on my lap.

Rubesgirl 07-16-2012 01:38 PM

I take my PP with me everywhere and when I'm sitting with DH in the evening in front of the TV, I work on it, also. It's a variation of GFG and will probably take me years to complete. At least I won't have to look for something else to do for a long while! :)

kayahr 07-16-2012 02:19 PM

I have hexagons and hand applique to carry to sewing sessions. I have my sewing machine set up in the same room as the TV, so I can always watch and sew.

Scissor Queen 07-16-2012 02:25 PM

No. I had to learn how to just relax and not do anything when I injured my right shoulder. A couple of years later I had surgery on that should and was barely even allowed to type for 6 weeks. It's still not 100% so I still have to just do nothing and let it rest pretty often.

Chicca 07-16-2012 02:27 PM

I just started a hand appliqued dresden plate project. Plus, a large cross stitch project that is a long term project. They both help when I do not feel like being at the sewing machine or my arthritis is to painful. I also do hand embroidery, but do not have a project at this time.

Tartan 07-16-2012 02:33 PM

I like to keep some Red Work on hand to work on. I find it very relaxing to do while I watch TV.

grammysharon 07-16-2012 09:22 PM

I just finished appliqueing a Hawaiian quilt and am now hand quilting it! Am going on a road trip and am making flowers to applique to blocks while on the road!! I find I hate not keeping my hands busy!!!!

NJ Quilter 07-17-2012 02:04 AM

Always have a quilt going to hand-quilt. I'm like others that need something to do with my hands while watching TV. Not getting too much done right now in this heat but it's here!

teddysmom 07-17-2012 03:10 AM

Always have hand piecing or hand quilting near by when hubby is watching TV.

happyquiltmom 07-17-2012 03:18 AM

Always!!!

Right now I'm English paper piecing blocks from month 2 of Vicki Bellino's Vintage Rouge block a month (Bloom Creek).
I also usually have projects going in needle turn applique and wool penny rugs, even an occasional embroidery project. I can't stand sitting idle in front of the TV. In fact, I don't really watch TV, I listen as I sew.

pamesue 07-17-2012 03:27 AM

hand qpplique for me...just finished some sunbonnets..which are adorable...and now I will be working on some grandma flower garden blocks...hexagons....need to get them cut.

HummerGardenCrafts 07-17-2012 03:35 AM

I keep several going all the time. And keep one in a tote just in case there's an emergency and I have to set for a long time. Sure helps calm the nerves too!

Val in IN 07-17-2012 03:52 AM

I have a hand-quilting project (Quilts of Valor panel wallhanging) in my sewing basket next to my chair. I also have a GFG blocks in a ziplock bag in my purse. The GFG blocks help pass the time at the Dr's office and on long car trips.

Skittl1321 07-17-2012 04:12 AM

Nope! I despise hand-sewing. Even just tucking the ends in after quilting is an annoyance for me. I pretty much sew nothing by hand- I use my sewing machine to sew buttons on after they break off shirts.

The only hand sewing I've ever done willingly was for the Craftsy Stupendous Stitching class, and it really did make the project look better- however, I want to make another one, but the handwork is what is putting me off.

sandy l 07-17-2012 06:34 AM

I keep my knitting bag with a dishrag, scarf, cap, etc. to work on for my TV time.

Kitsie 07-17-2012 07:44 AM

Oh, yes I do and your avatar is an example of my evening work! Not hand piecing, but appliqueing and hand quilting a king size also.

lakekids 07-17-2012 08:41 AM

No. I think 'hand' sewing is a dirty four letter word. LOL!

irishrose 07-17-2012 08:42 AM

I just started yesterday as I have a stretch of sitting in Dr's offices and a hospital coming up. I started a GFG table runner, but it wouldn't take much to switch to a yo-yo table runner. I pressed my first flower last night and it needs a little work. Previously, I knitted simple things.

I agree with Lakekids on no handsewing, but I can't take a machine into an office or waiting room.
