I am working on a Log Cabin that takes probably 35-40 different batik fabrics. I named them. Like Mr Ugly, Ms Sparkles, Bubbles, Ditzie Dottie, Passionate Purple, Olive Oyl.
My GF came over to quilt on Saturday and thought I was nuts when I was talking to myself."Mr. Ugly is up next" or "Come on Ditzie Dottie, lay straight for me" I have always named my fabrics in a project. It's the only way I can keep them in order when I am doing a piano border or bargello etc. She made me feel like it was the weirdest thing. Fess up. Am I an idiot or do you guys do this too? |
I don't, but I can see where it could be helpful.
|
I don't name them but I have been know to call them names when things aren't going right....LOL :D
|
what a good idea!!
|
I did it with four of the Slipknot shirts in my t-shirt quilt: "Maggot", "Paul Grey", "#2", and "Iowa". The only other person it made sense to without having to explain it was my brother, who likes Slipknot and will be getting the quilt when I get around to finishing it (wasn't originally intended for him).

Never have before, but thanks for the idea. Sounds like something that would help and fits my personality. :)
I name most everything else, why not my fabics! LOL |
LOL, that's a novel approach!

Ok, well I guess it is just me. I suppose you all dont make up little songs so that you keep track of piecing order either. "Some dark to the left, a light on the right and mama will be happy all night"
No wonder she looked at me like I was nuts. |
Interesting. Can't think what DH would do if he found me doing that, so perhaps best kept for when I am alone!
|
That's okay...they understand you in your own little world....
|
The names I have called some fabrics are not used in polite company!
|
I don't give them names, just mental-or verbal description. Blue dot, red swirl, green check--simple stuff but it does help to keep things in order. :)

I have never named them, always numbered them though. Daughter does it too :) rather than saying the purple wave is getting low, we will say need more #3. As long as we are on the same project its all good. But wow, when we are on different ones its confusing. My number 1 is her 3, it gets all kinds of annoying.

I don't really talk to the fabrics, but I tend to have a way of keeping them straight that is sort of like naming them. I pick out some distinctive trait--sparkly, pink, dotted, ugly, etc.--and keep track of them using the traits to keep them in order. I guess it's just one small step to naming them....just add Mr. Mrs. Miss or whatever.
Since I generally have my radio or iPod on with music and I sing with the tunes, I can't imagine adding my own made up songs to the mix. But maybe I would make fewer mistakes if I did! |
I don't name them per se, more of" this reminds me of" or this color looks like hog scour brown, lol don't ask. Although I did name my" lovely" in the ugly scrap challenge,it reminds me of the thorns in Sleeping Beauty, so I named it Malificents Thorns.
