Do you name your machine(s)?
I was highly amused, when I went to pick up my first "real" sewing machine recently, that my dealers named my machine for me! My name happens to (just by sheer coincidence) closely match the name of a character in Star Wars, which they got a HUGE kick out of, and when they found out I didn't have a name for my machine yet they promptly dubbed her "Princess Leia". :D
I thought it was funny as heck so I've kept it, plus I'm really bad at naming machines for some reason. My cars never have names either. My other machines are called by the oh-so-imaginative names of "the Brother" and "the Kenmore" - maybe I should bring them into the dealer and they can name them for me too! LOL What are your machines called, and how did you pick their names? Are the quilting police going to come get me for not naming my first two machines? ;) |
Yes, I name mine. FW is Shelley (name my child would have been named if he were a girl). Viking D1 is Susie (after my mom). My Viking 183 is Teal (since the front of the machine is that color) and finally my Viking 150 is Blackie (it's black) I know they are really creative but always made since to me.
I also name my cars, Little Red, and Red (they are both bright red). ha Ha |
I don't, but I think some of the names my fellow quilters here on the board use are so creative and fun.
|
I have too many machines to name them.
|
My first machine- a Singer Sonata- named her Betsy- just cuz
My Pfaff- "Happy Bottom"- my grandma's name was Gladys- ;) my FW- "Bella"-she's so pretty my two-tone 301-Sofia- yes, I am Italian~ my LA-"Hannah"-it means grace, and I need all the grace I can get!! |
If it won't come when I call it, I don't bother naming it.
|
I name all my machines- helps me to remember where or from who they came.
Just a couple of examples - Linnie = came from Lincolnville, Ginger=Ginger, Val= Valentine's gift to me from dh :-), Miss Sophie -after the original owner of a treadle given to me by a ggd. I named one of my very first treadles after someone who was a mentor and gave me confidence (and resources where to learn). Tiffany - she's a Singer with you guessed it, Tiffany decals. Not very imaginative, but helpful. d |
I laughed my head off at the one who only names things that will come when called. I, on the other hand, name everything. My 32 year old Bernina is Bernie. The newer Artista 180 is Nina (real original, so far huh) My Singer treadle is Freida, after my mother-in-law who gave her to me. My new Juki is Trixie, and my serger is Ziggy. I also name my cars and occasionally my Major appliances. My Dodge Caravan is Sylvia and hubbys pick-up is Lil Red. My first car, a VW bug was Petunia and I had a 61 Chevy Impala named Ezmarelda. My old 29 year old Maytag washer was Mr Lonely, He finally went to that big scrap pile in the sky. New one hasn't told me its name yet. My fridge is Edna and my garbage disposal is Oscar. I know none of them will come when I call them, but It's kinda fun to name my stuff and it tickles the grandkids.
|
My 1947 Kenmore is Matilda, no name for the other 2.
|
I've named only my FW, Violet. She seemed to need a name.
|
Yes, my machines do have names!
My vintage Singer 66 hand-crank is named Ambrozina, after my grandmother. My hale-and-hearty little Kenmore, who does anything I tell her to and gives me no problems, is named Edna. That just sounded like a "sturdy" name to me. My (new, not antique) Featherweight 75 is called Tinkerbell, because she's my lightest machine. My Singer Quantum L-500 is named Paris Hilton, because she's high-maintenance and sometimes a bit difficult to get along with (although she has been behaving VERY well lately, thank goodness). My newest machine is the Singer 160, and as soon as I took her out of the box, the first name that popped into my head was "Big Bertha"! So that's her name, the poor thing! |
yes I name my machines, my long arm quilter is name abigail after my middle grandaughter, my babylock sewing machine is named Taylor after my oldest grandaughter and my serger is named Gabe after my grandson. The machines just remind me of different quilties my grandchildren possess. My grandchildren think it is just so cool to have the machines named after them.

My first and true love is Betty, the domestic brother nx400.
then there is Sue, Sally, Minnie, Maude, Doris, and Kitty. |
My Baby Lock is "Quilla" and my brand-spanking-new-arrived-this-afternoon Handiquilter is "Trudy" The backup machine doesn't have a name.

Of course I name my machines. Keeps me from calling the, #%*+ when they are acting up. APQS Millenium is Matilda as in waltzing Matilda just love spending time with her. We got a black 301 from eBay who was just Brenda Lou from the start. Since featherweights are supposed to be the little sisters to the 301's the two black featherweights are Suzie and Sally. My Artista 640 is Patience, she patiently sits and waits her turn until I quit playing with the vintage machines and need her for something they can't do. The 3/4 size hand painted White Pearl is Patience's backup. She needs an oriental name to go with the style of painting but for now she is simply Pearl. We just received a mocha 301 from eBay. Her foot controller isn't working so we are dealing with the seller on a solution. I think I'll call her Tempest. All our other purchases have been as expected. As we get others up and running and I learn their personalities there will be more names to add to the list. :)

My Featherweight is called Sherry. I had a favorite uncle who called me Sherry all my life. My name is actually Shirley.
I never corrected him. Then he started calling my daughter Sherry. Her name is Amanda. We loved the man dearly and would just smile and nod. |
I don't name mine but quite often I call them names (unfit for print).

Love that!!!!!! I'm simple...I only have one machine, a pfaff and I refer to it as my pfaffje (my little pfaff) |
i call my machines names from time to time.
nothing i could put in public print, though. LOL |
My only machine with a name is my featherweight, Quiltie. I named her that because everyone here seems to name their Featherweights and I only use Quiltie for piecing quilt blocks, thus her name of Quiltie.
|
I have an sewing machine, an embroidery machine and now a quilting machine. I never thought to give them names. I remember when I was a child I did name my bike "Bess". I have NO idea why. Then my turtle was named "Pudgy". You are bringing back memories. lol:)

My FW is named "Millie" because it seemed appropriate for a machine born in 1948. My Janome Jem Platinum is "Opal", the Brother machine is just Brother, and my Kenmore I've recently named "Mr Ken More", since it's an old work horse and doesn't deserve a feminine name. I got it in the 70's and it weighs a ton. That's why I bought Brother.
My PE-770 embroider machine doesn't have a name. I never thought about naming it. |
